Welcome to the Shire of Irwin

Dongara-Denison : Gateway to the Batavia Coast

Just 3½ hours north of Perth by car lies Western Australia's Mid West region and the twin towns of Dongara and Port Denison. The Administrative Centre for the Shire of Irwin is situated in Dongara and overlooking the marina a few kilometres away is the twin town of Port Denison. This area offers a relaxed lifestyle with beautiful beaches, historical sites and a healthy fishing industry.  The main street, Moreton Terrace, is lined with Moreton Bay Fig trees which were planted in 1906 and are now a focal point of the town.

Originally built on a strong rural economy, Dongara and Port Denison now have a thriving rock lobster fishing and processing industry and is ever-increasing in popularity as a place for tourists.

Also known to many as the "wildflower region", this area is home to some of the world's finest collections of flowering plants.

If you have any issues or concerns that you think Council should be aware of, please complete our simple online form.

Vision

Main Street

To provide the community with an unequalled lifestyle, encompassing services, facilities, and recreational pursuits, and providing business opportunities which are both economically and environmentally sustainable.

Population

Children Playing on Beach

In the 2006 Census (held 8 August 2006), there were 3,052 persons usually resident in Irwin Shire.  The Shire of Irwin Council is currently planning for services and facilities to cater for a population of 5,000 in the year 2010 and 10,000 in the year 2020.

Tourism

Irwin's Marina

The opening of a major road from Brand Highway directly to the coast at Port Denison, has led to an increasing number of tourists visiting the town. Previously, the Brand Highway provided a bypass of the towns for travellers heading north but now people are stopping in to take advantage of a destination closer to Perth that offers a relaxed atmosphere, large range of affordable accommodation and restaurants, and wonderful sandy beaches for the kids.
