Shire President Update

Thank you to all the community members and people from across the region who came to our Magic on Moreton community celebration, I think we can all agree it was a fantastic evening.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our Shire staff that worked very hard to pull the event together and also our event sponsors Mitsui E&P Australia, Beach Energy and the Dongara Port Denison Larry Lobster Festival Committee. It would be impossible to hold an event such as this without their support.

This year the Shire worked with several community groups to light up the town for our Magic on Moreton event. We are especially grateful for the Dongara Men in Sheds for their support of our Christmas community collaboration project.

Dongara Men in Sheds built twenty mini-Christmas Trees that were decorated by local kids from Dongara District High School, Ready Set Grow Dongara and the Dongara Playgroup. These trees were on display in the main street at Magic on Moreton.

The group also built the remarkable Christmas Tree on display out the front of the Shire Admin building.

Recently the Shire received a complaint about noise at the Dongara Hotel.

Under the Western Australian State Government - Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations Act 1997 strict rules apply to licensed venues about the amount of noise they can emit. The Shire is therefore required by law to investigate any complaints we receive about a licensed venue.

After a thorough investigation with staff consulting the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and Racing Liquor and Gaming (RLG), we have determined that the Dongara Hotel was not in breach of noise levels and there was no validity to the complaint.

I want to thank the owners of the Dongara Hotel for their full co-operation, patience and understanding during the investigation and am pleased that the music can continue at the Dongara Hotel, adding to the vibrancy of our town centre.

2022 was a fantastic year for the Shire of Irwin, along with our normal day to day operations, we saw the completion of Stage 2 of the Two Henry Road, further upgrades to Memorial Park and extensive bushfire mitigation works completed across the Shire.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Councillors for their dedication to Irwin, the Shire CEO Shane Ivers and all the Shire staff for their hard work in 2022. Finally I thank the community for your ongoing support this year.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and happy New Year.  Please stay safe, take it easy on the roads and we will see you all in 2023!
