Aquatic Facilities Needs Analysis

The Shire of Irwin is investigating the aquatic facility needs of the community, different ways these needs might be met and the feasibility of each identified option.  The Shire wants to know what you think is needed to improve community access to aquatic facilities for swimming, exercise, therapy and recreation.

What are your highest priorities?

A Balanced View (ABV) Leisure Consultancy Services has been engaged to help facilitate this process and will be available to speak individually with members of the public at the following place and times:

Venue: Irwin Recreation Centre, Ridley Street, Port Denison

Date:  Thursday May 1, 2014

Times: Drop in any time between 11am and 1pm or between 4:30pm and 6:30pm.

Please note, this is a listening exercise whereby members of the public can drop in and spend a few minutes speaking to the consultant about what they think is needed.    If you are a representative of an organisation with an interest in aquatics, please contact Laurie Smith, Manager, of Recreation Services on 9955 9200 to organise a meeting with the consultant.

Damage Licence for Dealing with Corellas

A reminder that the Shire of Irwin is still in the process of trialling management measures to assist with the ongoing preservation of the Moreton Bay Fig trees in the town centre. To address this issue the Shire has obtained a Damage Licence from the Department of Parks and Wildlife which allows the nominated staff member (Ranger) to use non-lethal means to deter the birds from unwanted areas, subject to very strict conditions.

Please be aware that shots will continue to be fired in the town centre in the coming weeks during daylight hours.  Please also note that the Shire has to comply with the provisions of the Wildlife Conservation Act and Regulations.  If you have any queries or concerns please contact the Shire on 9927 0000.

RoadWise Committee – Shire of Irwin

The Roadwise Committee is actively supporting Towards Zero (the endorsed WA Road Transport Strategy). Towards Zero incorporates a safe system approach to improve road safety through:

Safe Road Use

Safe Roads and Roadsides

Safe Speeds

Safe Vehicles

The ultimate goal is to eliminate road fatalities and injuries altogether.

The total number of deaths last year from road accidents in WA was the lowest in 10 years.  Of the 162 fatalities, 73 occurred in the country and 89 in the metropolitan area.  This reduction is encouraging but there is clearly no room for complacency.  The Midwest – Gascoyne District road crash fatality rate was 20.22 people per 100,000 persons in 2012. This rate is far too high; the resultant loss, grief and suffering is immeasurable.

The Shire of Irwin is working in partnership with the community, Main Roads Department, WALGA RoadWise, Police Services, Dongara Denison Lions and Fire Brigade to actively promote road safety.  This approach includes raising awareness of driver fatigue, supporting safe, usable amenities for pedestrians, advocating for lower speeds in selected locations, promoting safe driving behaviours and future planning for improved road engineering and infrastructure.

Dongara Denison Lions have successfully operated the Driver Reviver program for almost 20 years. Drivers are encouraged to stop, have a coffee and take a break before continuing their journey.  Driver Reviver will be provided by volunteers (from the Information Bay near the town centre entrance) on Thursday 17 April 2014 before Easter.

The Roadwise Committee with assistance of community volunteers, conducted two walkability audits to check the safety of roadsides, amenities for pedestrians, cyclists and electric scooters plus general access issues.  The findings from these audits are used to make improvements and to inform access and infrastructure planning.  This work was recognised recently with the Shire of Irwin winning the 2014 Local Government Road Safety Award for Safe Roads and Roadsides – Rural.

Evidence demonstrates that reducing speed limits helps to save lives on our roads. Locations selected for specific safety improvements are based on evidence. The Roadwise Committee provided information and successfully advocated for a lower speed limit on Midlands Road near Pell Bridge.

The Shire of Irwin continues to improve roads and roadsides to make them safer.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility and I urge motorists to do their part by driving within the speed limit, avoid driving when fatigued and take time to rest and revive, avoid distractions, drive sober, show courtesy and patience and drive to the conditions of the road.  We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Easter,”  advised Councillor Bronwen Scott Chairperson, Shire of Irwin Roadwise Committee.
