Damage Licence for Dealing with Corellas

A reminder that the Shire of Irwin is still in the process of trialling management measures to assist with the ongoing preservation of the Moreton Bay Fig trees in the town centre. To address this issue the Shire has obtained a Damage Licence from the Department of Parks and Wildlife which allows the nominated staff member (Ranger) to use non-lethal means to deter the birds from unwanted areas, subject to very strict conditions.

Please be aware that shots will continue to be fired in the town centre in the coming weeks during daylight hours.  Please also note that the Shire has to comply with the provisions of the Wildlife Conservation Act and Regulations.  If you have any queries or concerns please contact the Shire on 9927 0000.

2014 LGMA Australasian Management Challenge

Following on from the LGMA Rural Management Challenge hosted here in Irwin in October 2013, a State Challenge was held in Perth last week to determine finalists to participate in the Australasian Challenge in June 2014.

The LGMA Management Challenge is a professional development activity undertaken annually by Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) for local government staff across Australia and the Society of Local Government Managers (SOLGM) in New Zealand.

The Challenge is a one-day leadership, team and management skill development program that asks teams to complete certain tasks throughout the day.

The Shire of Irwin participated in the State Challenge at the WACA in Perth last week. Nine local governments participated in the WA Challenge, the Shire of Irwin being the only Shire (rather than town or city) and one of only a few from regional WA.

Feedback from the team participants was very positive and allowed those staff to explore what Productive Communities means to our local government and community (as this was the theme of the challenge) and an opportunity to work in a team environment and gain a wider understanding of local government and management issues.

Results of the challenge are expected towards the end of April, so watch this space!

Visitors Centre staff attended and manned a stall at this year’s Perth Caravan and Camping Show at Claremont Showgrounds on 20 – 24 March 2014. Over 40,000 people were recorded as attended the Show over the five days of which many would have visited our stall.

Thank you to Rockpool for relieving the staff during the lunch break on Saturday, we really appreciate your help. Next year we would really love for other local businesses to join us at the Show to help promote our Shire and local businesses.

Fit2Live Bike Hike

Thank you to everyone that came along and enjoyed a sunny morning for the Fit2Live Bike Hike.

We had a total of 68 riders participate in the 3 rides. Well done to those riders that took on the challenge of riding further than you thought you were going to and to those of you that rode for the first time (a couple even with trainer wheels!).

A HUGE thank you to all the Rec Centre staff that assisted in getting everything ready for Saturday morning and making sure everything ran smoothly and tasted delicious!

The winners of the Lucky Draw raffle were:

1st Prize                  Jamie Radford          $250 voucher to Dongara Sport & Tackle

2nd Prize                 Red Jeffery               $50 voucher to Be Kirvi Surf

Winner of the Last Over the Line Race was

Dion Spurgeon                        $30 voucher Be Kirvi Surf

Of course an event like this can’t go ahead without helpers on the day, so a big thank you to those that were ‘leaders’ for each distance and those of you that helped with traffic control at some of the intersections (and to the cars that waited patiently J)

We look forward to seeing you all next year!!
