Emergency+ - New Smartphone App

Emergency+ is a new smartphone app that encourages people across Australia to call the right number for assistance in emergency and non-emergency situations.

Emergency+ was developed by the Triple Zero Awareness Work Group (TZAWG), a National body that represents emergency call-taking Agencies and their Government and industry partners throughout Australia. The App was specifically designed in response to a number of problems experienced by emergency call-takers and emergency services officers.

The TZAWG identified that more than 66% of incoming calls to Triple Zero (000) are now made from mobile phones; however callers are often unable to identify their location, meaning call processing times are longer and call-takers are unavailable to take the next incoming emergency calls.

Determining a caller’s location is the most critical piece of information emergency call centre staff require. If they do not know where an individual is; they are unable to turn out crews for assistance until more specific incident information is supplied.

The Emergency+ app uses the existing GPS functionality of smartphones to enable callers to provide emergency call-takers with their location as determined by their smartphone.

When activated, the built in accessibility features of a smartphone will describe aloud what appears on-screen, so a caller can use the app without seeing it.

Research also suggests that many people are not aware of the State Emergency Service (SES) or Police Assistance Line (PAL) numbers, meaning their default action is to call Triple Zero; tying up emergency call-takers unnecessarily.

The Emergency+ App includes the option of calling SES 132 500 and PAL 131 444 numbers, along with details of other relevant national numbers, such as Crime Stoppers and Health Direct Australia.

The original prototype of the Emergency+ App was built with initial funding from the Fire and Rescue NSW and 360 Entertainment, a software developer that also created the highly successful “Triple Zero Kids Challenge” safety game. Subsequent development costs have been funded through a National Emergency Management Project Grant from the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department.

Additional information on the Emergency+ App can be found at www.triplezero.gov.au.
