Town Revitalisation Planning Workshop

Council are inviting members of the public to attend a second community consultation workshop for the Town Revitalisation Plan. The appointed consultants, GHD, will be returning to present concepts created based on the information and feedback they received after their original visit in November last year. This will allow the public another opportunity to have their say in the future direction of the town precinct area.

This public open workshop is to be held on Saturday, 22 February 2014 in the Ocean Room at the Irwin Recreation Centre commencing at 10:00am.

Community Development Plan Workshop

The Shire of Irwin has engaged consultant company Building Better Communities to develop a Community Development Plan (CDP).

The completion of a Community Development Plan will enable the Shire of Irwin to take an integrated and co-ordinated approach to long term planning of our community development needs. The consultant will seek consultation from community and assess the need for additional facilities and programs to meet the long term needs of the Shire’s growing population. In line with meeting the expectations and needs of the community it is proposed that the CDP engage the following key focus areas:

  • Seniors and Aged Care Services;

  • Community Events;

  • Youth;

  • Volunteer Program;

  • Families;

  • Arts and Culture

There will be an public open workshop held at the Irwin Recreation Centre Function Room on Tuesday, 11 February 2014 commencing at 6pm. Should you wish to find out more please contact Mrs Coralie Palmer Manager Community Services on 9927 0000 or email managercommunity@irwin.wa.gov.au.

Australia Day Celebrations

The Shire of Irwin, in partnership with the Dongara Denison Lions Club Inc held a successful Australian Day celebration on the Port Denison Foreshore on Sunday, 26 January 2014. 

The Shire would like to make a special mention to our wonderful sponsor Stone Echo Pty Ltd for the Fireworks Spectacular and the Aerobatics Display which were truly a work of art. Feedback has been very positive and there was a huge crowd enjoying the festivities.

Celebrations began with music by the Nathan Gaunt Duo which was followed by the acknowledgement of nominees and announcements of winners for the Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards. Congratulations to the following Active Citizenship Award recipients:

  • Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizen Award – 25 years or older – Doug Johns

  • Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizen Award – under 25 years Joshua Crane

  • Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizen Award for Community Group - Dongara Charities Association.                                

This was a Free Event and the entertainment was provided by Humpy Camels, Mad Hatter Markets, Jolly Lobster (water slide and jumping castle), Rainbows ‘n’ Fairydust (Face painting), and various food outlets. Thanks to the Dongara Denison Lions Club for the Lions Train, cooking the sausage sizzle, watermelon and free water on the day. 

Extended Opening Hours Trial – Irwin Rec

For the duration of Term 1 (Monday, 3 February 2014 to Friday, 11 April 2014) the Gym will remain open between 12pm and 3pm Monday to Friday. This is a TRIAL ONLY and will only continue if there is an identified need.

To coincide with the extended gym hours, and to cater for local business employees we are excited to announce that we will be adding a new class to our timetable. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, between 12:15pm – 12:45pm we will be running a quick 30 minute Express Fitness Class to get you in and out during your lunch break.

The Irwin Rec is also running a class attendance competition. Record your name every time you participate in a class and at the conclusion of each term the person who has attended the most classes will receive a $40 voucher to be used at the Rec Centre. There will also be an overall winner across the 4 terms, who will receive a 3 month membership (or equivalent).

SAVE THE DATE – The Fit2Live Bike Hike is on again, 22 March 2014. More information will be provided in the coming weeks.

Employment Vacancy - Plant Operator

Applications close Friday, 14 February 2014 for the Plant Operator position.

The Plant Operator will be required to operate mainly road rollers with the construction/road maintenance teams. It would be highly advantageous if applicants have past experience on other plant and equipment. Applications for this role close at 5.00pm on Friday, 14 February 2014.

Draft Dongara & Port Denison District Structure Plan

A reminder that the Draft District Structure Plan is available for viewing at the Shire of Irwin Administration Office, 11-13 Waldeck Street, Dongara or online at www.irwin.wa.gov.au under the Planning menu. Comments on the Draft must be submitted to the Shire in writing on or before 4:30pm on Friday, 28 February 2014.

2014 Shire of Irwin Heritage Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2014 Shire of Irwin Heritage Awards. The Irwin Heritage Award is aimed at recognising excellence in conservation and exceptional efforts in promoting heritage within the Shire. 

The award is given annually and may be awarded to Individuals, Community Groups, Government Bodies or Business Groups. Nominations could be a building, a collection of natural or cultural landscapes, a promotion, a publication or a website.

To enter, please complete a nomination form and submit to the Shire by 5.00pm on Thursday, 17 April 2014. Nomination forms are available from the Shire of Irwin Administration Office, 13 Waldeck Street.
