Draft Dongara & Port Denison District Structure Plan

The Shire has prepared a Draft District Structure Plan for Dongara and Port Denison. The Plan will guide future land use and development in these areas, and public comments are now invited.

The Draft District Structure Plan is available for viewing at the Shire of Irwin Administration, 11-13 Waldeck Street, Dongara or online at www.irwin.wa.gov.au under the Planning menu. Comments on the Draft may be submitted to the Shire in writing on or before 4:30pm on Friday, 28 February 2014.

Operations Support Officer

An opportunity exists for a friendly, competent and enthusiastic person to join the Shire of Irwin Operations Team as an Operations Support Officer.

In this role you will be required to undertake a range of duties including engineering, computer programs, administration, records keeping, customer service and a number of duties in a support role for the Manager Works.

This position will be for an initial 12 month period with the option of becoming a permanent position.

This is a genuine opportunity to work for a progressive local government, work with a great team and play an integral role in the future of the Shire.

Damage Licence for Dealing with Corellas

The Shire of Irwin is once again trialling management measures to assist with the ongoing preservation of the Moreton Bay Fig trees in the town centre. To address this issue the Shire has obtained a Damage Licence from the Department of Parks and Wildlife which allows the nominated staff member (Ranger) to use non-lethal means to deter the birds from unwanted areas.

Please be aware that shots may be fired in the town centre in the coming weeks during daylight hours. If you have any queries or concerns please contact the Shire on 9927 0000.

Community Assistance Scheme

The Community Assistance Scheme is closing at 4:30pm this Friday, 10 January 2014.

Hollomby Foundation Scholarship

The Shire of Irwin is a proud sponsor of the Hollomby Foundation and Geraldton Universities Centre. The Shire of Irwin Scholarship of $3,000 is open to residents of the Shire of Irwin undertaking an undergraduate degree at the Geraldton Universities Centre either part time or full time. 

Applications for 2014 Scholarships are now open and close on Wednesday, 26 February 2014.

The Geraldton Universities Centre manages the application and selection process and advertises the scholarship via their website http://www.guc.edu.au/students_scholarships.aspx

You only need to complete one application form and you will be considered for the scholarship as long as you meet the eligibility criteria.

Community Perceptions Survey

As outlined in our last Bulletin page, the Shire of Irwin wishes to share the results of the Community Perceptions Survey.

To begin with, here are a few statistics regarding the overall satisfaction with the Shire of Irwin;

As a place to live      
94% satisfied              
3% neutral                  
3% dissatisfied

76% of the respondents who were satisfied, provided a rating of 8+ and were considered to be delighted.

 As a governing body
77% satisfied  
13% neutral    
10% dissatisfied

Overall satisfaction with the Shire of Irwin as the organisation that governs the local area is relatively high.48% are delighted. Satisfaction was higher among younger singles and couples, and seniors.

Value for money from rates
63% satisfied  
17% neutral
20% dissatisfied

The Shire of Irwin is considered to be above the industry standard in this category. 33% of the satisfied respondents are delighted with the value of money from rates.

Australia Day at the Foreshore 2014

 

Following the success of the Fireworks finale at the Larry Lobster Festival last year, the Dongara Denison Community Festival Association, proudly sponsored by Stone Echo Pty Ltd, will be putting on the LARGEST fireworks display outside the Metropolitan area which will be included as part of the Australia Day Celebrations.

 

As well as this other entertainment including music by Nathan Gaunt, Camel Rides, market stalls, water slides; face painting andan Aerobatic display will be on offer for FREE.

 

Celebrations will begin with the acknowledgement of nominees and announcement of the winners of the Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizen Awards at 5pm.

Some of the activities include Science, Craft, Gardening and Cooking, A waterslide and sausage sizzle will be held on the final day.

Story Time and Library Services

Story Time will be back on at 9:30am each Tuesday from 4 February 2014. The Library will continue to provide Better Beginnings packs to families with a new arrival. A reminder that you can access eBooks from our Library and even have a specific book ordered in from another library on loan. Call the Library staff on 9927 1859 or email library@irwin.wa.gov.au.
