Council Chamber Renovations

The original administration building had been added to over the years as the need required. This caused a few structural problems, in particular roof leaks. Council obtained State Government funding to carry this single storey renovation project out in two stages. In stage one the external walls are being rebuilt to match the administration building adjacent to it; similarly the roof will be restored to match the roofs of adjacent buildings and therefore creating a harmonious streetscape. During the second stage the Council Chamber will be modernised and moved further back to allow offices to take up the space previously occupied by the Chambers.

If you would like to find out more please give us a call on 9927 0000.

Changes Affecting Wireless Microphone Users

This is an advise note from the ACMA for community members about changes that will affect wireless microphone users in our community. The changes are part of the Federal Government’s work to clear specific radiofrequency spectrum (known as the ‘digital dividend’) so that it can be used to provide 4G mobile broadband services from 1 January 2015. From that date spectrum located in the 694-820 megahertz (MHz) frequency range will be used solely to provide 4G mobile broadband services.  It will be illegal to operate wireless microphones and other audio devices in that frequency range because they may cause or receive interference to and from the mobile broadband service.

Many community groups and small businesses use wireless microphones for a range of purposes, including school assemblies, religious services, theatre and live music performances and sporting events. The ACMA is strongly encouraging users to check their equipment and to start planning for the change now so that they know that their equipment will comply with the change by 1 January 2015.

The ACMA have made available a range of resources to make it as easy as possible for people to prepare for the changes, which include fact sheets and a wireless microphone hub; an online one-stop-shop for information on the changes .

Asbestos Awareness Month

During Australia’s first national Asbestos Awareness Month, the Shire of Irwin is urging all residents to ‘stop playing renovation roulette’ in a campaign to fight asbestos-related diseases caused by inhaling dangerous asbestos fibres while renovating or maintaining homes.

Asbestos can be found under floor coverings such as carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles, behind wall and floor tiles, in cement floors, internal and external walls, ceilings, eaves, garages, roofs, fences, backyard and farm sheds. It could be anywhere!

There is no safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres. If homeowners damage or disturb asbestos products when renovating or maintaining their home and release fibres into the air, they’re playing renovation roulette and putting their health and the health of their family at risk. Visit to learn where asbestos might be in your home and how to manage it safely because it’s not worth the risk!
