String of Achievements in Shire of Irwin

The Shire of Irwin wishes to acknowledge the various community groups, individuals and businesses that have received awards over the past few months.

The Visitor’s Centre recently enjoyed success at the WA Top Tourism, with a win in the  Community Relations category and our Manager Tourism and Library Services was runner up in the Golden i Awards.

The Caltex Roadhouse received numerous awards at the National Great Aussie Pie Awards. With the Prawn Laksa taking out gold.

As mentioned in the last fortnight, Jaeger O’Meara was named the Best First Year Player and AFL Rising Star for 2013.

The Shire has been nominated for Excellence in Coastal Management as part of the 2013 WA Coastal Awards.

Hanging of the Quilts

The Dongara Patchwork Club is hosting their triannual Hanging of the Quilts on 13 October 2013 between 9am and 4:30pm at the Irwin Rec Centre.

The Hanging of the Quilts includes a huge display of quilts, artisan displays, market stalls and refreshments.

Local Government Elections

Elections are being held by postal vote on Saturday 19 October 2013. Election packages have been sent out, should you require a replacement package please obtain one from the Shire office prior to election day or visit the Irwin Rec (polling place) on election day.

All postal votes must be received by 6pm on Saturday 19 October 2013. The count of votes will begin upon closure of the polling place.

Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards

The Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards promote national pride, community responsibility and participation by fostering, recognising and celebrating significant contributions to community life and active citizenship in all local government areas of WA.

The Shire of Irwin would like to encourage the community to nominate those who may deserve recognition in the following categories;

Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award

Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship for a person under 25 years; and

Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for a community group or event.

The Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards will be presented at the 2013 Australia Day event however nominations close Nov 2013.

Nomination forms can be obtained from the Shire Office. Contact Coralie Palmer on 9927 0000 for further information.

Gym and Fitness Classes

Please be advised that no fitness classes and the gym will be closed on Monday 30 September (public holiday) and fitness classes are also cancelled for Monday 7 October. All other classes are normal during school holidays.

Coastline Footage Sought

The Perth International Arts Festival, ABC Television and the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia are calling for Super 8 (16 or 8mm preferred) footage of Australia’s coastline for their documentary Girt By Sea. If you have any footage that captures life on the coast, such as surfing, fishing and holidays, go to www.abc.net.au/arts/girtbysea. The world premiere will be shown at the Festival in February 2014.

Administration Traineeship

We are currently seeking an Administration Trainee to join the Shire of Irwin team. It is essential that applicants have completed Year 12 and are willing to pursue a 12 month position in the Administration (4 months), Library/Visitros Centre (4 months) and Recreation Centre (4 months).
