Nomination for Excellence in Coastal Management

The Shire of Irwin has been nominated in the 2013 WA Coastal Awards for Excellence for significant steps taken to improve its management of the coastal environment in recent years.

The Shire has been recognised by regional natural resource management groups and state government agencies for various initiatives that steadily builds community awareness and enthusiasm and overcomes budget paralysis in order to address these issues.

Some projects include weed management programs and restoration works at the Irwin River Estuary, removal of unnecessary coastal infrastructure, coastal monitoring activities, educational programs and  other  initiatives that focus on community engagement.

The Shire of Irwin is taking proactive steps to consider and tackle coastal management challenges where possible and will continue to liaise with community groups, government agencies and other organisations to ensure that the natural environment is conserved and protected as well as possible.

Black Cockatoos

Have you seen any black-cockatoos with white tails lately? If so, BirdLife Australia wants to hear from you.

BirdLife Australia is asking people to be on the lookout for the large, white-tailed black-cockatoos known as Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoos between now and Christmas, and report any sightings.

The population of Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoos has been shrinking since the 1950s, and BirdLife Australia is keen to hear from anybody who sees the birds so that they may determine how many there are and exactly where they still occur. If you’d like to get involved, or would like more information, contact BirdLife Australia’s Matt Fossey on (08) 9287 2204.

If you could please report any sightings via the BirdLife Australia website (http://www.birdlife.org.au/projects/carnabys-black-cockatoo-recovery/breeding-range-survey); it takes only a few moments to complete.
