Public Workshop for the Strategic Community Plan

Thank you to the neary 50 residents that attended las Thursday's Community Workshop and provided crucial input into the Shire's first Community Strategic Plan.

Participants were invited to complete a number of community engagement activities that would outline their future vision for Irwin and demonstrate their individual priorities in respect to the Shire services and activities. The Shire's independent facilitator has recorded all the participants' contributions and this will be analysed and will be used in the preparation of the first draft of the Community Strategic Plan.

If you are unable to attend the Workshop, the online version of the related Community Survey is available for you to access through the Shire's website ( or at the following URL:

Alternatively, a printed version of the survey has been sent to all local households and post office boxes. Copies are also available from the Shire office and there is a replay paid service so you can post the surveys back free of charge or there are deposit boxes at the Shire office and Irwin Rec.

A joint Shire of Irwin/Roadwise marquee will also be located within the Dongara Irwin Race Club grounds at the annual Easter Race Day this Saturday so please drop by to pick up or complete a survey form. You might also win a prize in the Roadwise raffle!.

I strongly encourage you to take this opportunity to participate in the development of the strategic community plan and please feel free to contact Coralie or myself on 9927 0000 for any further details.

Shire’s new administration centre at 11-13 Waldeck Street, Dongara.

New Building Act 2011

Thanks upfront for your patience and understanding as, from this week, the processing of applications for building permits by the Shire must now follow the provisions of the new Building Act 2011. It has been over fifty years since the building legislation was last reformed so the new Act introduces major changes for all stakeholders involved in the building process.

Some of the changes include allowing builders to choose to engage local government or private certifiers to confirm the building design complies with building standards, introduces statutory time limits for local governments (permit authorities) to grant approvals, provides an obligation on applicants to organise all information before applying for a permit (such as prior approvals relating to planning, health, heritage, etc), pay the new fees at the time of application and builders will be required to provide a Notice of Completion or Notice of Cessation. Further details can be obtained at or the Shire office.
