St Dominics Road

A reminder that due to ongoing road works the speed limit is currently 60km/h on St Dominics Road. There is some loose stone remaining on the road and we therefore encourage you to slow done and be considerate of other road users. The second coat of seal is scheduled for 4 February 2013. This work will include installation of a safety barrier around the sharp corner.

Mosquito Control

With increasing numbers mosquitoes in town we urge residents to take care to avoid mosquito bites.

Home Prevention - Mosquitoes can breed in standing water; by eliminating breeding sites around your home you can help to reduce mosquito numbers in your backyard.

o    Dispose of all water holding containers eg. old car tyres, tins, buckets, wheelbarrows, etc or store upside down.

o   Keep ponds stocked with mosquito eating fish eg. goldfish.

o    Keep swimming pools chlorinated and free of dead leaves.

o    Fit mosquito proof cowls to the vents on septic systems.

o    Screen the tops of rainwater tanks and/or add paraffin oil to cover the water surface.

o    Empty pot plant drip trays once a week and empty and clean animal water bowls and troughs once a week.

Insect Repellent - Use insect repellent on areas of exposed skin when mosquitoes are active. The most effective repellents contain 5-20% diethyl toluamide or DEET and come in lotion form rather than roll on or spray. Be aware repellents containing greater than 20% DEET are not suitable for infants and young children. Repellents generally last up to two hours before requiring reapplication.

Transfer Station

Please be aware that the Port Denison Transfer Station is closed on the 25 and 26 December and on the 1January. The rubbish pick-up remains as usual.

Road Safety Message from the Irwin Roadwise Committee

The Irwin Roadwise Committee’s long term vision is of a safe system in which no one is killed or seriously injured. To help us achieve this vision all community members have a role to play in working towards this vision. As part of this safe system we ask all road users – pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to show courtesy to others, travel at safe speeds, not to drink and drive and not to drive while tired. Please take extra care on the roads and roadsides with more children, residents and visitors around during the holidays.

For those travelling over the holiday period, we wish everyone a safe journey and return.

Best Wishes for the Holiday Period

On behalf of the Shire President, Councillors and staff, I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable break over the festive season. Merry Christmas to all, see you again in the New Year.
