Library News

I would like to remind everyone that as the Library is undergoing renovations it will be necessary for some parts of the Library to be closed and some fiction books relocated. Whilst this will cause some service interruption, and apologise for any inconvenience, the works will provide for a more efficient and effective library and visitor centre.

The Library also has Lions Xmas Cakes in stock for purchase.

If you are a member of our Library you can now download free eBooks using your membership number. Access is available at www.wapldmc.lib.overdrive.com - click on My Account, select Dongara Public Library, type in your 14 digit membership number and start to add your books to the cart. Please contact the staff if you need any assistance by phoning 9927 1859.

Reduce Litter Through Cash for Containers

A Cash for Containers scheme could reduce Western Australia’s litter problem by potentially eliminating nearly half of those items currently most littered across the State.

The 2012 Keep Australia Beautiful National Litter Index identifies WA as having the highest volume of litter in the nation, prompting calls for changes in behaviour and increases to fines for littering.

The WA Local Government Association called upon the State to introduce a Cash for Containers scheme to encourage individuals to recycle containers, stating this could have a marked impact upon levels of littering and reduce the costs of litter clean up, estimated at $20 million per year.

Mayor Pickard said although a national process was currently being considered, it was not supported by all states and is therefore unlikely to succeed.

“We are calling on the WA Environment Minster to introduce a Cash for Containers scheme for Western Australia, using his existing powers under the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Act 2007,” he said.

“While increased fines to reduce litter are an important part of the solution, it is also vital to provide incentives for people to do the right thing.

“A Cash for Containers scheme, like they have in South Australia, provides a strong incentive to recycle containers – and if they are thrown away, the 10 cent deposit rewards others who gather and recycle them”.

Ribbons a Reminder to be Safe on the Roads this Festive Season

With the holiday period approaching, the Shire of Irwin is joining forces with WALGA’s RoadWise Program to take part in the White Ribbons™ for Road Safety campaign which is focused on promoting the Towards Zero vision in line with the state’s road safety strategy. I ask that residents do the right thing by not drinking and driving, not speeding, not driving tired, wearing a seatbelt and being mindful of all road users.

You can help raise awareness of the importance of road safety by wearing a white ribbon which will soon be available from the Shire office or Dongara Police Station. For more information about the campaign visit www.roadwise.asn.au.
