Australian Citizenship Day - 17 September 2012

Monday 17 September 2012 was Australian Citizenship Day. This special day was introduced in 2001 to celebrate and value Australian citizenship and the peaceful, prosperous and inclusive society we share. On this day we hosted a Citizenship Ceremony for two new Australian citizen’s Mrs Thongsuk Gilbert and Miss Warittha Rayabsri who are residents of the Irwin Shire. I would like to formally congratulate, welcome and wish them well as Australian citizens.

Dongara Eagles Football/Netball Windup and Presentation Night

My wife, Jane, and I had the pleasure of attending the Dongara Eagles Football/Netball Windup and Presentation Night on Saturday, 15 September in the Function Room of Irwin Rec. This was a fantastic event (at an excellent venue!) had great food and enjoyable company. Well done to all the award recipients and the Clubs for a great season.

Pre-Primary and Kindergarten Students Visit the Dongara Library

Thank you to the enthusiastic and well behaved students who attended the Dongara Library last week. The Pre-Primary and Kindergarten students enjoyed Story Time and were presented with a Better Beginnings pack, as part of a program to encourage and support early childhood reading. If anyone is interested in learning more about Better Beginnings or Story Time please contact Manager Library and Tourism Services – Nicole Nelson on 9927 1859 or email ManagerTourism@irwin.wa.gov.au.

The 10+ year Strategic Community Plan and Corporate Business Plan will deliver the following outcomes:

  • a long term strategic community plan that links community aspirations with the council’s vision;
  • a corporate business plan that integrates resourcing plans with the strategic community plan; and
  • a vision for the future viability of the local government area linked to the annual budget

Comments and submissions will be accepted until 4pm on Monday, 8 October 2012. Please contact the Shire’s Research and Projects Officer, Lauren Tunbridge, on 9927 0000 or projects@irwin.wa.gov.au for further information.

South Beach Environmental Protection

You may have noticed a sign has recently been placed at the road entrance to South Beach seeking co-operation of beach users by not undertaking a number of environmentally-damaging activities. Also, Shire staff and a number of community-minded volunteers have installed seaweed barriers to help protect the beach and dunes in the area. On behalf of the Shire, I thank both the volunteers and staff for this assistance which has already seen a significant improvement in respect to the environmental management of the area.

Signage, similar to that at South Beach, is soon to be installed at the Town and Northshore beach areas and, coupled with the installation of vehicle barriers to some of the public access points to these beaches, it is hoped that we will see the same environmental outcomes as at South Beach.
