New Dog Control Legislation

The Dog Amendment Bill 2012 has been introduced to parliament recently which will see some changes made in order to provide greater protection to the community by tightening the provision relating to dangerous dogs (including restricted breeds), and enabling local governments to more effectively deal with nuisance dog behaviour.

 The Bill introduces amendments in the following key areas;

  • ·         Improving community safety through increased controls over dangerous dogs (including restricted breeds), and higher penalties encouraging more responsible dog ownership;
  • ·         Enabling nuisance dogs, including nuisance barking dogs, to be more effectively dealt with;
  • ·         Recognition of assistance dogs as an extension of the guide dog provisions; and
  • ·         Meeting changing community expectations in areas such as microchipping, lifetime dog registrations and impounding provisions.

 If you would like to view a copy of the Bill or find out more information please visit the Department of Local Government’s website www.dlg.wa.gov.au in the ‘Legislation Under Review’ section or visit the ‘Current Bills’ section of the Parliament of WA’s website www.parliament.wa.gov.au.

 Parliamentary consideration of the amendments will commence on or after the 11 September 2012.

Western Australian 50 Year Volunteer Service Badge

The Western Australian Government introduced the 50-Year Volunteer Service Badge in 2011 to recognise and celebrate those volunteers who have contributed at least 50 years of service to one organisation.

 Past and current volunteers who have contributed to the mission and functioning of a group, club, or organisation or to a local government or a state government department are eligible to be nominated by their organisation.

 The Minister for Seniors and Volunteering will present this prestigious award at a special event on Thank A Volunteer Day in Perth on Wednesday 5 December 2012.  Recipients unable to attend the Perth event can make alternative arrangements including a presentation from a Member of Parliament.

 Volunteers who have received long service awards through a local organisational award program will also be eligible to receive a Western Australian Volunteer Service Badge.

 New nominations may be made at any time of year however if volunteers are to receive their badge on Thank A Volunteer Day in 2012, nominations will close at noon on Monday 1 October 2012.

 Please contact Coralie Palmer, the Shire’s Manager Community Services on 9927 0000 for further information.
