SAD NEWS ON NEWLY ELECTED DEPUTY PRESIDENT

The Shire and broader community mourns the loss of the late Cr Barrye Thompson who sadly passed away on Sunday night.

Our deepest sympathies to Sue, family and those close to him. The Shire President, Councillors and staff send their well wishes.

Cr Thompson was elected to Council in 2015 and most recently elected Deputy President following the 2017 elections. He served on a number of Committees during this time and was particularly passionate about facilitating positive economic outcomes for both the Shire and community.

His contributions as a Councillor have been facilitated through a long career within the local government and commerce sectors. He has held the role of Executive Officer for the Northern Country Zone of WALGA for many years and has almost 50 years' experience as an officer within local government, including CEO at a number of locations across regional WA.

Relatives and friends are invited to a service at the Denison Bowling Club on Monday, 20 November 2017 at 1:30pm.

WELCOME OUR NEW CUSTOMER SERVICE AND RECREATION OFFICERS

The Shire welcomes two new Customer Service Officers to the team, congratulations to Shannon Potts and Mikayla Jenkins. Jayce Price is also now the newest recruit at the Irwin Rec as a Recreation Officer. They are all new to local government but bring with them key skills and knowledge that will be valuable to their respective teams.

ALLEGED TREE LOPPING SCAM

The Shire has received a report that, under the guise of a legitimate tree lopping company, individuals have posed as a contractor operating on behalf of the Shire of Irwin to undertake tree lopping works. Unfortunately, at least one resident has taken them at their word and parted with a significant amount of money.

The matter has been reported to the police. Should you have further information that may assist them with their investigations please contact them.

Except for emergencies, the Shire does not authorise works to be undertaken on private property without agreement with the appropriate landowners. Direct payment to the contractor would not be expected as any contract would be between the Shire and contractor, and Shire and landowner.

I hope this warning can help others to avoid being taken advantage of.

U-TURN BIKERESCUE - CITY OF GREATER GERALDTON

The City of Greater Geraldton (CGG) are running a youth program that invites teenagers to strip down and repair unwanted bikes so that they can be reused. Each youth involved can donate one bike to charity and claim a second to keep. If you have a bike to donate please contact Simone at the CGG on 9956 6778. Should there be enough donations from Dongara she is willing to make the trip to pick them up.
