The Great Bike Hike - 24 August 2012

The Great Bike Hike is a celebration of people and places involved in creating welcoming and affirming communities for people with a disability, mental illness, their families and carers.  A team of up to 12 riders, including several paralympians, will be cycling nearly 2,500 kilometres from Perth to Broome in August and September 2012. The focus of the ride is to celebrate the many diverse projects and activities enriching the lives of everyone within their community.

They will be travelling through 26 towns on their way to Broome. Organisers of the Great Bike Hike are looking for local people, organisations and projects in communities between Perth and Broome to be part of this awareness-raising event. They will be arriving in Dongara Friday 24 August 2012. If you would like to nominate a project or sponsor this worthy cause go to the Great Bike Hike website:

Regional Achievement & Community Awards

The Western Australian Regional Achievement and Community Awards are about recognising rural and regional individuals and groups in your community.

There can never be enough encouragement and support for those working in rural and regional areas. Awards such as these create an opportunity to say thank you to businesses, community groups and individuals who work tirelessly in developing their chosen fields of endeavour.

Shire President Stuart Chandler invites community members to get involved and nominate a local individual or group who are helping to reshape and inspire our community. “If you know an individual or group making a real difference in our community, why not nominate them for one of the prestigious awards’.

Nominations close on Tuesday 21 August and entry forms are available by contacting the Awards Office on 9201 1155 or via

Shire of Irwin Budget 2012-2013 - Fees and Charges

Following on from last week’s information concerning the Shire’s 2012-2013 Budget, it is important to note that in order to minimize annual rates increases, Council reviews and generally increases alternative revenue sources so that as far and as fair as possible users of the Shire’s goods and services (such as at the waste transfer station, sporting facilities, cemetery, bus hire, etc)  make an appropriate contribution to the budget’s ‘bottom line’.

For further information please refer to the Shire’s ‘Schedule of Fees and Charges’ which is available from the Shire office or on our website  -
