SHIRE STAFF ASSIST POLICE IN DEALING WITH OUTLAW MOTORCYCLE CLUB

Over the Easter weekend, and without Shire knowledge, around 60 members of an outlaw motorcycle club arrived and took up camp in Port Denison.

On Easter Saturday, and due to the nature of the Club, the Police were the controlling agency responsible for monitoring and managing the club members’ activities whilst in town. On this basis alone, it was not appropriate for the Shire’s Community Ranger to personally engage with Club members directly but he did assist Police with traffic control measures associated with the Dongara Races.

Early on Easter Sunday, following a serious incident at the Priory Hotel on Saturday night, the Shire’s CEO, met with senior Police at the Dongara Police Station. As a result of this meeting, the CEO met with senior members of the Club and formally requested that the Club members leave immediately at which point a Police contingent of 70 officers from various units ensured the Club members then left town.

CALL CENTRE AFTER HOURS CONTACT AND EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE

The Shire of Irwin Call Centre is activated for after hours contact, including weekends and public holidays. If you have an urgent issue to raise please note that there may be a short wait time before an operator is able to assist with your enquiry. Records show that the wait time is on average about 30 seconds, so please stay on the line. All calls are logged and timed so if you experience an unreasonable wait time please provide that feedback to us.

The Shire was contacted to assist with traffic management in response to last weekend’s road accident, until the appropriate authorities were mobilised. In urgent cases such as this, the Call Centre will be in touch with the appropriate staff directly to accommodate any urgent actions so please persevere in waiting on the line. Thankfully the CEO was contacted and was able to assist with directing traffic to ensure the safety and integrity of those on site, including emergency workers, was maintained.

The Shire recognises and congratulates the efforts of our volunteers, who are deserving of this throughout the year, but particularly in regards to recent incidents. We urge everyone to stay vigilant and safe on the roads, and hope that there is now a long reprieve from any similar incidents.
