Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers, stallholders and visitors who attended our Retro Festival last weekend. With the markets, vintage car display, rollerdrome, candy store and the Drive In. By all accounts it was well received and we hope to hold another I the future.

We also celebrated the Dongara Denison Drive In’s 50th Birthday on the Saturday night. You may have noticed the new Drive In sign that has been installed on the ticket box at the entry to the Drive In – $10,000 was provided by Lotterywest for this project (and the Shire contributed $3,000).

The Perth Wildcats are on tour again and coming to the Irwin Recreation Centre on Friday, 26 May 2017 from 4-6pm. The clinic is open to those aged 6-12 years. The cost is $65 per participant (includes a Perth Wildcats supporter membership and merchandise pack).

Places are limited for each clinic so register your details to avoid missing out – visit

Don’t miss the rare opportunity to meet the stars and get involved in basketball clinics and events run by the Perth Wildcats players and coaches themselves.

There have been a number of reports of bluebottles washing up on our beaches recently so please take care. Information on symptoms and treatment can be found below. Always seek medical attention if you are unsure, or if symptoms are severe or ongoing.

Did you know that washing the site of a bluebottle sting with vinegar is NOT recommended?

Advice is that any remaining tentacles are carefully removed by gently washing the area in sea water and picking off any tentacles, taking care to avoid further stings, preferably by wearing gloves. Immerse the area where the bluebottle sting has occurred in hot water (45 degrees Celsius - no hotter than the rescuer can comfortably tolerate) for at least 20 minutes or, if this is not possible, direct a hot shower on the area for this length of time.

The Shire of Irwin is seeking public comments on the Draft Industrial Land Use Strategy

The strategy aims to maximise the economic potential of the Shire’s industrial areas, by identifying opportunities to engage with local, regional, national and international markets, and provide for development-ready industrial land.

The draft local strategy is available for viewing on the Shire’s website (under the Planning tab) or at the Shire office at 11-13 Waldeck Street, Dongara where they will be available for inspection during office hours. Submissions on the draft local planning strategy may be made in writing and lodged with the Shire on or before 12pm Monday 24 April 2017.

Written submissions may be emailed to Doug Fotheringham, Manager Regulatory Services

The issue of climate change means we need to rethink the way we run our households. To help, the Shire of Irwin and the Tidy Towns Sustainable Committee have prepared Smart Living Guidelines to learn how you can reduce water usage, energy consumption and waste within your household, enhance biodiversity in our urban environment and reduce your household bills.

You can download a copy from the Shire’s website, on the Tidy Towns Sustainable Committee page.

The Shire of Irwin Tidy Town Sustainable Committee and the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC) invite you to nominate an area around town that you would like to see the focus for Clean-Up Australia Day.

Clean-Up Australia Day is focused on collecting rubbish, bottles, cans etc and any area nominated will need to be family friendly so everyone can join in.

The date for Clean-Up Australia Day in Dongara will be 13 May 2017.

To nominate an area for cleaning-up, please contact Yvette Robb, Regulatory Support Officer on 9927 0000 or email

Stage 2 – Clarkson Street through to O’Brien Park

The Shire of Irwin in conjunction with the Tidy Towns Sustainability Committee will be undertaking stage 2 of the Point Leander Drive verge planting project in the coming weeks.

This project was identified in the Shire’s 2015 - 2020 Green Infrastructure Strategy and aims to beautify Point Leander Drive whilst improving the aesthetic appearance of the area. The project will provide the community with shaded footpaths, reduce pavement heat in the warmer months whilst also increasing social and recreational value to the area.

The project will include planting approximately 100 established trees along the western footpath from Clarkson Street through to O’Brien Park. The trees for this project have been specifically selected for their tolerance to the Midwest regions climate; being drought tolerant whilst also offering maximum shade through a wide umbrella canopy.

The Green Infrastructure Strategy is available from the Shire’s website or by contacting the Administration Office on 9927 0000.

For further information regarding this project please contact Mark Jones, Supervisor Operations on 9927 2268 or email
