President's Column - Issue 9 2016

Created on: Wednesday, 31 August 2016 at 10:06:09 AM

The 2016/17 Budget was adopted at the August Council meeting with its core focus on balancing key community objectives, supporting economic growth, meeting asset and operational needs and addressing the Shires long term sustainability. Our key focus moving forward will be the responsible management of assets including roads, plant, buildings and the efficient use of our resources. To reflect the tough economic conditions, Council has identified a number of internal savings that will allow for a balanced Budget centred on a 3% increase in rates.

Please note there are a number of payment options indicated on the rate notice that allows rate payers to choose a payment plan that best suits their circumstances.

The business case supporting the Foreshore Plan and extended trail through to the town centre, together with the concept drawings was completed and submitted to the Mid West Development Commission on August 29. The Commission Board will now consider the proposal and if supported will forward it to the Department of Regional Development for consideration before presenting it to Cabinet for funding approval. Also on the 29th in Jurien Bay, the CEO and the Manager Community Capacity had the opportunity to meet with the Premier the Hon. Colin Barnett to familiarise him with the project which fits very well with his vision for tourism along the Mid West Coast.

It is great to see that our request for the speed limit sign near the Skate Park to be moved further north has been completed by Main Roads - hopefully this will provide additional protection around the car park area. A reminder that the Skate Park precinct has been included in the submission to the MWDC so if we are successful with the funding this will fast track the development of this area.

A reminder that the use of trail bikes on river walking trails is prohibited. Not only do they damage the trails but they also pose a safety issue for other users.

Over the 26th and 27th of August the annual Municipal Golf tournament was held at Williams attracting some 120 participants from around country WA and the metropolitan area. This tournament is sponsored annually by the Local Government Insurance Service (LGIS) and is hosted each year by the winners of the previous year.

Although the team representing our shire fell a little short of winning the final day we were very fortunate that the winning team representing the Shire of Peppermint Grove lead by John Merrick and including two members of the Dongara Golf Club, nominated the 2017 event to be held in Dongara. This will provide a financial opportunity not only for the Golf Club but for the local business community as well as an opportunity to show case our district.

The third of our "meeting the people" sessions for residents of the Dongara townsite and areas north will be held in late September - please keep an eye out for ads in the Rag over the coming weeks.
