President's Column - Issue 7 2016

Created on: Tuesday, 12 July 2016 at 10:45:11 AM

Cr Ian West, JP                                    Issue 7     7 July 2016

The Oral History launch took place on the 21st June at the Function Room attended by large number of residents and interested persons. An on-the-spot interview with Lynton Watson was not only informative but very entertaining. My thanks goes out to Trish Parker for the fantastic job she has done facilitating the interviews for this unique project and thanks also to all those who shared their special stories with her.

I would like to extend mine and Council’s congratulations to Ron and Sue Saulsman for being awarded the Geraldton Newspaper's Business of the Year for the Dongara Tourist Park at this year’s MWCCI Business Excellence Awards night. Also receiving the Dragonfly Media Micro Business Award capped off a great year for their business.

The 27th June saw the 2016 Tourism Forum held at the Function Room at the Irwin Rec with the focus on promotion of the area. A number of sporting clubs and local businesses were in attendance and were happy to share what they had to offer visitors to the area. A number of exciting events will be heading our way over the next few months. These being, the Museum and RSL War of Remembrance display during August and September, the Port Denison Speed Trials and the Mid West Show and Shine on the 25th September. Also on this weekend the Ulysses Club (motor bikes) will hold their state meeting at the Irwin Rec which is envisaged to attract several hundred visitors to the town.

Of interest to the residents of the Irwin townsite, Main Roads are presently assessing the request to reduce the speed limit through the townsite area to 90km. Unfortunately the wheels of progress move slowly considering the request was made back in April.

While referring to Irwin we are still trying to get a response from Telstra regarding the poor condition of the exchange there during a power failure. Unfortunately there has been some staff changes at Telstra but we are persisting - hang in there.

A request from our meeting with parents and children at the Skate Park on April 15 was for the 50km speed sign (presently positioned in the centre of the car park) to be moved further to the north to better protect this area. I am pleased to inform residents that the Main Roads has issued a works request to have the sign relocated and also the provision of a second sign on the opposite side of the road. A positive outcome initiated through community engagement - well done.

Thursday the 30th was the second of our "meet the people" sessions held at the Sea Rescue building and attended by some 25 residents. I would like to thank those in attendance for the manner in which they presented their issues, their willingness to allow the opportunity for all to have a fair hearing and the spirit in which they engaged in the meeting.

The concept drawings for the proposed, extended foreshore development were on display at the Irwin Rec on Election Day for residents to view and make comment on. There are two further consultation opportunities on the 7th and 9th July for residents to hear the plan and comment through the feedback questionnaires which will be critical to the final design work.

The regulatory requirement to advertise the differential rate in the dollars over all classes of rate categorises has been done with two submissions received queering the rate imposed on mining tenements. These have been given fair consideration and the rate in the dollar altered to align with 2015/16 figure. We are now awaiting the Minister's approval on these differential rates.

The draft budget has now been completed and although not required under legislation we have put it out to public consultation. Copies are available on the Shire web site or can be viewed at the front counter at the Council the time line for the adoption of the Budget was August but depending on the Minister's approval it could be as early as the July meeting.
