The Shire of Irwin would like to invite the public to attend the launch of the 2016 Oral History Project 10am on Tuesday 21 June at the Rec Centre Function Room. Morning tea will be provided.

With the co-operation of Oral Historian Trish Parker, Irwin locals, past and present, were interviewed to collect memories of historical importance. So far 30 interviews have been recorded on themes including farming, education and development of the town. One of the interviewees was Phyllis Money. She and her family were evacuated to Latham at the start of World War II, and she remembers the changes when she returned:

“Everything was black, and when you put your hands near the shop windows, they had netting wire over them. Alec Leitch had the headlights painted black, half way down, so they just shone on the road. When we got home, all the army was in the house down the back, and that was their headquarters for Dongara, for Port Denison, and the spare block behind us was where the Bren gun carriers were.”

Please RSVP by Monday 13 June, Dongara Public Library

The Public Free Wi-Fi at the Port Denison Foreshore is currently not operating.

Storm activity in April damaged the Wi-Fi equipment at the Port Denison foreshore. Warranty replacement parts are being sent from the United States and this has taken longer than expected. Further to our previous advert the service is anticipated to be back on during the month of June. The free Wi-Fi service is still available in Dongara. The Shire regrets any inconvenience.

Please contact Nicole Nelson on 9927 1404 or email if further information is required.

The Dongara Volunteer Fire Brigade will be conducting fuel mitigation works, including fuel reduction burns, within the Dongara and Port Denison townsites from late-June to late-September.

The implementation of this program is weather dependent.

Please contact Kyle Pollitt, Community Emergency Services Manager on 9927 0000 or email with any enquiries.

Are you a teenager ready to learn to drive?  We know how important getting your licence is for you.  Some basic tips to keep you and your friends safe include learning the road rules, getting 120 hours of supervised driving experience, driving in accordance with the road conditions, hosting safe parties and avoiding distractions.

To help you prepare to get your licence a DVD titled Ignition is available for loan from the Dongara Library. We suggest you may want to watch this DVD with your parents or persons who will supervise you driving. Ignition can also be watched at the Library.

All teenagers who borrow Ignition during the period 1st March until 24 June 2016 will automatically go in the draw to win a Dash Cam.

Did you know that drivers under 24 years are twice as likely to crash as older drivers?  Please make sure you are not one of these statistics!
