President's Column - Issue 5 2016

Created on: Tuesday, 3 May 2016 at 12:07:32 PM

Thanks to those who have approached me and given positive feedback on this column. I believe it is an additional way of giving updates to the community on various issues that may not be covered elsewhere.

Friday April 15 was the Irwin Rec South Precinct Working Group's meeting with members of the public and most importantly the children who use the BMX track and Skate Park. The meeting was held on site at the Skate Park and was well attended with some 30 parents and a similar number of children. There were many good ideas expressed including; installing a toilet at the park; redesigning and shortening the BMX track to make it more user friendly; expanding the bowl of the skate park to create a more challenging environment for our more advanced skate boarders; better parking and pedestrian access to the skate park; better signage and extending the speed limit further along Ocean Drive to give better protection to the area; and consideration of a small playground and picnic area.

The next step will be for the working group to draw up a concept plan of the area which will be made available to interested parties for their comment and possible changes. Community consultation is the key to acceptable outcomes and I thank all those who turned up and participated in the discussion.

Irwin Residents Community Meeting - Update on outcomes

Following the Irwin Residents Community meeting on 11 March 2016, actions were recorded and allocated through the Shire Customer Request system. The below summarises actions that have been taken to date.

Rolands Ave (ICS1625443) – area where culvert was removed from was inspected and advice is that the water course has not changed therefore removal of culvert is not the cause of issue. This requires further investigation.

Recognition of Historic Townsite (ICS1625444) – raised at the Heritage Committee on 18 March. It was suggested that the townsite and original post office are of historical significance and the suggestion was to investigate an interpretive signage project (may be funding under Lotterwest). Further advice to be provided on project at a later stage.

Speed Along Midlands Road and School Bus Signs (ICS1625444) – raised at Roadwise Committee. In response ‘Please Slow Down Consider Our Kids’ bin stickers have been provided to Mrs Horne for distribution in area. Main Roads noted the Bus Stop Sign request and will investigate. The CEO has also provided correspondence to Main Roads in regards to these issues.

Mobile, Phone and Internet Reception – correspondence has been prepared to send to Melissa Price and Telstra outlining the difficulties experienced by Irwin residents.

External Light at Irwin Fire Shed (ICS1625442) – an external light is yet to be fitted.

A special mention and thanks to the MEEDAC crews who have been working around town and have done some excellent work along the river, at the bowling and golf clubs and also at the race club. Their involvement in these areas have taken an enormous load off volunteers and have enabled much needed work to be completed.

I am planning the next "meet the people" session for June possibly at Port Denison so keep an eye out for notices in the Rag closer to the time.

The toxic weed Crown Beard or more commonly known as Dongara Daisy is becoming more prominent within the townsite and landowners can help control its spread by removing it from their properties. See article in this edition of the Rag.

As I will be away until the 22nd of May Cr Mike Smith will be deputising for me during my absence.

Cr Ian West, Shire President
