Better Practice Review (BPR) Program

Some may recall that in early 2015, the Shire agreed to participate in the Department of Local Government and Communities’ (DLGC) Better Practice (BPR) Program. In April, a dedicated BPR team undertook a site visit and reviewed a checklist to assess the Shire’s activities and practices in regards to the key performance areas of Governance, Planning and Regulatory functions, Plan for the Future, Assets and Finance, Workforce Planning and Human Resource Management and Community Consultation.

Based on the checklist and on-site assessment a draft report was prepared which outlined the Shire’s performance in each area and provided feedback on its achievements. The Shire had an opportunity to review the Draft before the Final Report was prepared.

The BPR Final Report has now been released by the Department for endorsement by Council and is presented within the Agenda for next week’s Ordinary Council Meeting (23 Feb).

To compliment the Report, the Minister for Local Government, the Hon. Tony Simpson MLA has provided correspondence addressed to the Shire President congratulating Council and staff for the level of better practice the Shire is achieving.

The Report and Action Plan will assist the Shire to develop a culture of continuous improvement, good governance and compliance, promote innovation, working towards best practice.

NBN – Industry Workforce Development Program

Due to the impending upgrade to the local nbn™ network, nbn has recently announced the introduction of a technical skills training program, aiming to create an industry-based, sustainable, and multi-technology capable workforce in cooperation with their Delivery Partners.

As stated on their website, “To build, operate and maintain the nbn™ network, it is estimated that the skilled workforce available to those Delivery Partners may need to increase by more than 4,500 roles – almost doubling the current external workforce actively engaged on the nbn™ project.

The Industry Workforce Development Program includes the following key activities:

  • Facilitating recruitment with  Delivery Partners – referring candidates who complete an expression of interest to work on the nbn™ network to Delivery Partners for their consideration and recruitment
  • Technical skills training – subsidised training pathways for individuals to gain the skills needed to work on the nbn™ network in key occupations
  • Accreditation – ensuring that all  individuals working on the nbn™ network are accredited for nbn mandated health and safety requirements

You could be eligible for the Industry Development Workforce Program if you are:

  • A career starter wanting to build a career in the telecommunications industry.
  • An experienced telecommunications worker, with vital skills and knowledge of the existing copper network;
  • A general job seeker, with work experience in a different industry and wanting to transition to the telecommunications industry; or
  • Currently employed by one of the nbn’s Delivery Partners or subcontractors, working on the nbn™ network or telecommunications activity and you are ready to be      cross-skilled into an adjacent occupation;
  • Currently employed with one of our Delivery Partners or subcontractors, working on non-telecommunications activity and you are ready to be up-skilled with the required knowledge      and skills to work on the nbn™ network.”
