President's Column - Issue 3 2016

Created on: Monday, 8 February 2016 at 1:03:26 PM

Cr Ian West, JP                                                                          Issue 3, 8 February 2016

Hard to believe that we are a month into 2016 - schools back, so everything returns to some sort of normality.

Unfortunately I have been away during the latter half of January so missed what was, from all accounts, an enjoyable and well organised Australia Day. Hats off to the committee for the many hours of their time that they devoted to the organizing of this event. Congratulations to the Premier's Australia Day Active Citizen Awards recipients -

  • Active Citizen Award - 25 years or older - Robert and Helen Cail
  • Active Citizen Award for Community Group or Event - Dongara Returned services League.

Many thanks to my Deputy Mike Smith for officiating on the day and the other duties he deputised for me on during the fortnight I was away.

The Buy Local campaign was a great success and generated an enormous interest throughout the community. This incentive was a great promotion, not only for the participating businesses but also for the town, with great exposure gained through the outside broadcast by Spirit 98.1 FM. Congratulations to Mike Coulter the recipient of the winning key.

The Irwin Rec South Precinct Working Group met with the Tennis club in January to discuss with them ideas for the future layout of the courts and this area in general. They are keen to present some additional ideas so, post our next meeting, we should be in a position to present to Council a definitive plan for the tennis court precinct. Future meetings will involve the parents and children who use both the skate park and the BMX track with the view to determine future use and development of this area.

Residents will have noticed the rejuvenated grassed area on the foreshore opposite George St. This area was reticulated and forms part of the revitalisation of this area. Once top dressed, seating placed here and the play ground finished, it will present an inviting area for families and young children. To our gardening team - well done.

Congratulations to the TidyTown's volunteers for their efforts at the recent beach clean-up - it's due to dedication by such groups that we are able to enjoy the beautiful beaches along our coast. The flip side to this is that, we all individually, need to be responsible for the preservation of this great natural resource and do our bit to preserve it.

Receiving consistent radio and television transmission has been an issue ever since the analogue system was replaced by a digital form of transmission. Council has made a number of approaches to the relevant authorities for some solution to the problem, but with little joy. I have written to Melissa Price MP, our local federal member, seeking her assistance on this issue.

Residents may have noticed a vehicle equipped with a satellite dish in various locations around town this month. Its purpose is to monitor TV transmission signals around Dongara- Port Denison, so areas of poor reception can be documented.

I will be commencing my initiative "to take the Council out to the community" in the coming weeks. This will see a number of informal meetings at five locations around the Shire over the course of the year. The date, time and location will be advertised in the Rag over a couple of weeks, but with not everyone reading the local newspaper I am relying on word of mouth to pass the details on. If these meetings prove popular and well attended my intention is to conduct these annually.
