Water for Food

The Irwin area has recently been selected as an intensive irrigated horticulture focus area under the Water for Food Midlands Project.

The $4.7 million Water for Food Midlands groundwater and land assessment project aims to confirm groundwater availability in the Midlands area between Gingin and Dongara, one of the most economically promising irrigation zones in the State. This project seeks to identify one or more 2,000 to 3,000 hectare focus areas suitable for intensive irrigated horticulture.

The Irwin area has been selected for further investigation as an irrigated horticulture hotspot. This area has been carefully selected with input from the community, experts and industry bodies. Irwin is one of only two areas selected, the other being the area between Dandaragan and Badgingarra.

Analysis will be conducted in the focus area on water, soil types, crop suitability and infrastructure suitable to intensive irrigated horticulture, with this information made available to the public. It is intended that land owners and current growers will be able to use the information to support the expansion of existing operations or to attract new investment.

The identification of Irwin as a focus area does not have any impact on land ownership.

Stakeholders have been invited to a public briefing on the Irwin focus area, on 9 February from 12.00 noon to 1.30pm, at the Priory Hotel, 11 St Dominics Road, Dongara.

RSVP is essential for catering purposes by Friday, 5 February 2016 to

Safe Driving On The Beach

Dongara is blessed with magnificent beaches and the privilege to enjoy these beaches by way of 4WD, motorbikes and all terrain vehicles. Before you drive on the coast make sure you know the local rules about using vehicles on beaches. The Shire of Irwin Ranger regularly patrols our shoreline during the summer months.

By following the tips below you will help protect our beaches and have a safe and enjoyable visit.

Recognise the right of others to use the beach. Keep a lookout for pedestrians. Be alert and drive carefully at walking pace.Drive at the high tide mark to avoid contact with other beach users.Drive in areas not used by general beach users eg. Families & Recreational Fisherman.Park using care for others.Observe all laws and regulations relating to the use of vehicles on beaches; you can still be charged for dangerous driving.Do not drink and drive.Vegetated sand dunes are easily damaged. Strictly avoid these areas.Keep off the sand dunes except at designated crossing points for access to and from the beach.Keep the beaches and dunes clean; carry your rubbish home. If others have left a mess, consider cleaning it up.

It takes only a few inconsiderate people to damage the reputation of all 4WD and all terrain vehicle users.

For further information contact the Shire of Irwin on 9927 0000 or the Ranger on 0427 110 237.
