President's Column - Issue 1 2016

Created on: Wednesday, 13 January 2016 at 4:57:49 PM

Cr Ian West, JP                                                                                      13 January 2016

Another years come and gone and we seem to continue to be amazed, just where the time has gone. I hope everyone was able to experience a joyful and safe Christmas and New Year period.

During December a number of our new committees had their first meetings:

The Aquatic Needs Advisory Committee met to consider the contents of the Aquatic Facilities Report prepared earlier, including aquatic facility designs and costs, possible integration with the Irwin Rec's physical and management structures and outline a specific future direction to Council.

The Irwin Rec South Precinct Working Group - This group will look at the development of this area including the tennis courts, skate park and BMX track and will meet with members of all of these groups early in the new year.

The swings at the foreshore playgrounds, after much delay in sourcing parts and the supply of new equipment, have been replaced and the surrounds filled with sand to meet the current safety standards. Thanks to Mark and Wayne for their efforts in getting these items in place before Christmas so they can be utilised during the holiday period.

It must be pointed out that once older play equipment is removed it must be either made compliant with the new safety standards or replaced with equipment meeting these standards. This compliance extends to the ground beneath these items which must be of a soft fall nature. To have this area functional for the holiday period river sand was used and although not completely retained at present will be in the near future or replaced with a rubberised compound dependant on cost. In the scheme of things any sand that may at present blow from this area is relatively minor compared with that naturally generated in our coastal environment.

As we all know volunteer groups are extremely important to the organising of the many activities that are available here in the Shire and I would like to single out groups that are active at this time of the year.

During one of my trips to the South Beach I was most impressed by the organisation of events by the Surf Club for their junior members and the dedication by parents in marshalling the activities was highly commendable. Surf lifesaving not only teaches life skills to its members but is a great way to involve the whole family.

Another worthy of mention is the group of dedicated volunteers who man the "Driver Reviver" stop on the Brand Highway. This operated on the school break up, Friday 18th December, some 80 vehicles took advantage of the service. Although it's hard to quantify the actual effect this has on road trauma it's certain that the drivers of these vehicles continued on their journey in a physically and mentally refreshed state.

The Local Emergency Management Committee conducted an exercise during December at the Marina, simulating a boat fire and missing person which involved all of our emergency services. The lessons learnt from these exercises are extremely important when dealing with a real emergency.

The fires in the South West once again reinforces the destructive nature of fire and the need to be as best prepared as possible. Our local brigade has sent a crew and fire appliance to the South to assist and relieve exhausted fire personnel.

A reminder that there is no Council meeting in January but the normal meeting schedule will once again resume in February - remember any issues of an operational nature can be dealt with by our customer service staff at the Shire office.
