Local Law Review

The submission period for the Shire’s Local Law Review has been extended to Monday, 21 December 2015.

Council resolved at its Ordinary Council Meeting in August to review all of its Local Laws to determine whether or not the Laws should be repealed, amended or remade. The following Local Laws are therefore under review;

  • Activities on Thoroughfares and Trading in Thoroughfares and Public Places Local Law
  • Bush Fire Brigades Local Law
  • Dogs Local Law
  • Local Laws Relating to the Dongara Public Cemetery
  • Extractive Industries Local Law
  • Fencing Local Law
  • Health Local Law
  • Local Government Property Local Law
  • Parking & Parking Facilities Local Law
  • Sand Drift Prevention & Abatement 2004 Local Law
  • Local Laws Relating to Signs, Hoardings & Bill Posting
  • Standing Orders Local Law

A copy of the Local Laws may be inspected or obtained from the Shire Administration (between 8:30am – 4:30pm weekdays) upon request or can be downloaded from the Shire’s website at www.irwin.wa.gov.au/About/LocalLaws.

Submissions regarding these Local Laws may be provided by email to reception@irwin.wa.gov.au or in writing to;

Chief Executive Officer
Shire of Irwin
PMB 21
DONGARA WA 6525

Submissions close at 12 noon, Monday, 21 December 2015.

Following the public consultation period, submissions to the Shire will be reviewed and summarised, and a report to Council will be developed with recommendations on whether the Local Laws are to be repealed, amended or remade.

Should Council resolve not to appeal, amend or remake any local laws then the review process is complete and no further action is required. However, should Council resolve to repeal, amend or remake a Local Law then the process to do so must be undertaken in the same manner as adoption of a Local Law. This will provide members of the public to review any proposed new or amended Local Laws and provide further comment prior to Council consideration.

Please contact Erin Greaves, Coordinator Executive Services on 9927 0000 or email ea@irwin.wa.gov.au for further information on the review or the local law making process.

Age-Friendly Communities Plan

The Shire of Irwin has been successful in receiving funding from the Department of Local Government and Communities for the purpose of preparing an Age-Friendly Community Plan.

The steps involved in the age-friendly community process will assist our community to identify age-friendly features, age-friendly barriers and suggestions for improvement in relation to the physical and social environment in relation to eight topics:

  • Outdoor spaces and buildings;
  • Transportation;
  • Housing;
  • Respect and inclusion;
  • Social participation;
  • Communication and information;
  • Civic participation and employment;
  • Community support and health services.

What is an Age-Friendly Community?

An age-friendly community is one which:

  • Recognises the great diversity among older people;
  • Promotes their inclusion and contribution in all areas of community life;
  • Respects their decision and lifestyle choices and;
  • Anticipates and responds flexibly to ageing-related needs and preferences.

Consultants SDF Global have been engaged to facilitate this process and as part of developing the plan, we will be undertaking written surveys, online surveys, workshops, telephone interviews and focus group meetings.

An INVITATION is extended to all individuals Over  55 as well as Service  and Agency Providers  with  an  interest in  Age-Friendly   Communities  to  attend  a  Focus  Group Meeting.

Senior's participation in the Shire's consultation process is essential to an age-friendly approach to community planning. The Shire therefore seeks community input through the following Focus Groups:

Seniors and I or Carers Focus Group: Wednesday 2 or Thursday 3 December.

Age Care Service Providers Focus Group: Thursday 3 or Friday 4 December.

Dates and venues to be finalised once Expression of Interests are received

If you would like to be involved, either ring Coralie Palmer or complete the Information Sheet  included  and  return  it  to  the  Shire  via,  email,  or  hand  deliver  to  the  Shire Administration Building by Friday 13 November 2015.

Successful applicants will be contacted and further information provided along with discussion questions to consider before the Focus Group Meeting.

Please contact Coralie Palmer if you would like to be involved or require more information on 9927 0000 or email managercommunity@irwin.wa.gov.au.
