Calling All Beach Lovers

NACC’s photo-monitoring program aims to collect long term baseline data that can be used to inform coastal management decisions.

With funding assistance from Coastwest, the program kicked off with just a hand full of volunteers who monitored just 27 sites around Geraldton. Further Coastwest funding enabled the development of the smartphone app Photomon and the monitoring of 91 sites between Kalbarri and Guilderton, with over 6500 photos being taken during this time.

NACC currently have a few sites around Geraldton and Dongara that do not currently have a dedicated volunteer to monitor them.

Photo monitoring is very easy and is a great way to get the children involved so if you visit the beach regularly, have a smartphone and would like to be a part of the program, NACC would love to hear from you.

The beaches below need your help!

South Beach – Boat Ramp – Granny’s Beach – Surf Beach – Seven Mile Beach

If you would like some more information or would like to register your interest, please contact Felicity Beswick on (08) 9938 0108 or felicity.beswick@nacc.com.au.

WA Weekender

Keep an eye out on television for the WA Weekender program on GWN or, if in Perth Channel 7, on Saturday 5 September at 5.30pm for an episode on Dongara. It will also feature the Indian Ocean Drive, which was done by Australia’s Coral Coast.

Our episode includes a story on Doyle’s famous Award Winning Pies (at Caltex), the Priory Hotel and the Visitor Centre. The combination of businesses was arranged by Nicole Nelson and each business shared the costs of filming. We then get to keep the episode which will be loaded onto our website. As of 1 September 2015, Toxfree will be providing the Shire of Irwin with waste management services, as part of a new regional waste contract with the City of Greater Geraldton, Shire of Northampton and Shire of Chapman Valley.

Local Government Elections 2015

The Shire has four vacancies in this year’s Council Elections. Nominations for candidates open 3 September and close 10 September.

The WA Electoral Commission is running a postal election on behalf of the Shire. Should sufficient nominations be received to hold an election, residents should receive a postal voting package in mid September.

Packages may be mailed direct to the Electoral Commission or can be hand delivered to the Shire Administration up until the day before Election Day which is Saturday, 17 October 2015.

The new Council Chambers will serve as the venue for Election Day including the vote count. Whilst this is a postal election and you are encouraged to submit your vote prior to Election Day, the Council Chambers will be open for people to hand deliver their postal package or to obtain a provisional voting package.

Returning Officer, Robert Mark can assist with any enquiries – please contact him on 0438 161 079.
