Inaugural LGIS Excellence Award

The Shire of Irwin was the recipient of the inaugural LGIS Excellence award at last week’s WALGA Convention.

LGIS WA is an industry-based partnership of WA local governments, working to achieve the best insurance and risk management solutions for its members.

The Shire of Irwin was considered to have shown remarkable and long standing leadership in the region in the areas of risk management and safety and have also achieved an exemplary claims experience over the last decade.

The Chief Executive Officer received the award on behalf the Shire.

 

Obelisk Precinct Update

Roadwork at the Obelisk Precinct is being completed this week, which should see the area open to traffic over the weekend.

The next phase will see footpaths installed to connect the Obelisk Precinct with he foreshore area. This work is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. Please watch this space for further updates or follow the Shire on Facebook.

Change of Council Meeting Date

The Ordinary Council Meeting to be held Tuesday, 25 August 2015 has been rescheduled to 4.00pm on Monday, 24 August 2015 in the Ocean Room at the Irwin Rec, Ridley Street, Port Denison.

The Shire is also anticipating that Council meetings will be held in the new Council Chambers from September!

 

Grant Writing Workshop

Representatives from not-for-profit community, sporting and service groups, event organisers are invited to attend this Grant Writing Workshop. Interested applicants are invited to attend either the morning or evening session.

This is a great opportunity to talk about the do’s and don’ts of grant writing and to discuss your project prior to applying for the Community Assistance Scheme Funding.

Date: Tuesday 25 August
Time: 10am – 11am and 5.30pm to 6.30pm
Venue: Irwin Recreation Centre

Community Assistance Scheme

The Shire of Irwin Community Assistance Scheme is to provide assistance to not for profit community based organisations, event organisers and individuals to support the promotion and development of social, economic, recreational, art and cultural projects that make a positive contribution to the quality of life within the Shire of Irwin. The Community Assistance Scheme provides the framework for the Shire of Irwin to administer community sponsorship.

This framework ensures a consistent approach to all applicants who apply for assistance. The Scheme is open for Submissions, and closing Monday 14 September 2015 at 5pm. Projects must be completed by 30 June 2016. Anyone interested in applying must discuss their proposed project with the Manager Community Services on the details below. Copies of the Guideline and Application form can be obtained from the Shire of Irwin website, www.irwin.wa.gov.au or contact Coralie Palmer on 9927 0000 or email managercommunity@irwinwa.gov.au.

 

 

Local Planning Scheme No.5 Draft Local Planning Policy

Local planning scheme no.5 Draft local planning policy – extractive industries. Notice is hereby given that the local government of the Shire of Irwin has prepared the above mentioned Draft Local Planning Policy for Extractive Industries. The draft policy is available for inspection at the Shire office or on the Shire website www.irwin.wa.gov.au (under the Planning tab).

Comments on the proposal may be submitted to the Shire in writing on or before12pm Monday 7 September 2015. Please contact Doug Fotheringham, Manager Planning Services on 9927 0000 or email mps@irwin.wa.gov.au for further information.

 

Prospective Elected Members Information

WALGA is offering a free webinar for individuals who are considering becoming Elected Members on Wednesday, 12 August at 5.30pm. The webinar will run for 45 minutes and will cover the following topics:

  • About Local Government
  • Becoming an Elected Member
  • Elected Member roles and responsibilities
  • Council Meetings
  • Personal responsibilities of an Elected Member such as what constitutes a conflict of interest; and
  • Impacts on Home Life.

The Shire of Irwin is also hosting a Candidate Information Session on Monday 24 August 2015 at 6:30 pm in the Ocean Room at the Recreation Centre following the Ordinary Council Meeting. Nominations for candidates to nominate for Council open on Thursday 3 September 2015 and close 4pm 10 September 2015.

The Local Government Election will be held on Saturday 17 October. However, Council have resolved for the election to be conducted by the WA Electoral Commission and held by postal vote.

Localeye App

Created by WALGA, localeye is a free mobile app for use by WA residents and visitors alike, enabling users to easily locate Council facilities, places of interest or local events, and report problems direct to the Council, all within the swipe of a few screens.

Whether users are looking to plan a trip from Geraldton to Margaret River or wanting to find the perfect park in Joondalup for a picnic, localeye will guide them all the way!

localeye is available on both the App Store for iOS devices, and the Google Play store for Android devices (and an update is currently in the works to simplify the ‘Discover’ tab).

 

Larry Lobster Festival

To assist in the 2015 Larry Lobster Festival being held at the Port Denison Foreshore on Saturday, 21 November 2015. The Committee is looking to make this event bigger and better than ever and as such, YOUR help is needed!!

Anyone that is interested in providing sponsorship, running an activity or having a stall on the day, please go to the ‘Larry Lobster Festival’ page (under ‘Community’ heading > Events) on the Shire’s website (www.irwin.wa.gov.au) in order to access the relevant forms.
