2014/2015 Oral History Project

With the co-operation of Oral Historian Trish Parker, Irwin locals were interviewed to collect memories of historic importance. The themes of the interviews were fishing, farming and education. These valuable treasures are now preserved on disc and paper for current and future generations and available for you at the Dongara Public Library. The Library also stocks previous oral history interviews of residents sourced from the Battye Library.

Larry Lobster Festival

The 2015 Larry Lobster Festival is being held at the Port Denison Foreshore on Saturday, 21 November 2015. We are looking to make this event bigger and better than ever and as such, we need YOUR help!!

Anyone that is interested in providing sponsorship, running an activity or having a stall on the day, please go to the ‘Larry Lobster Festival’ page (under ‘Community’ heading > Events) on the Shire’s website ( in order to access the relevant forms. Local Planning Scheme No.5 Draft Local Planning Policy

Notice is hereby given that the local government of the Shire of Irwin has prepared the above mentioned Draft Local Planning Policy for Extractive Industries.The draft policy is available for inspection at the Shire office or on the Shire website (under the Planning tab).

Comments on the proposal may be submitted to the Shire in writing on or before 12pm Monday 7 September 2015.

Community Assistance Scheme

The Shire of Irwin Community Assistance Scheme is to provide assistance to not for profit community based organisations, event organisers and individuals to support the promotion and development of social, economic, recreational, art and cultural projects that make a positive contribution to the quality of life within the Shire of Irwin.

The Community Assistance Scheme provides the framework for the Shire of Irwin to administer community sponsorship. This framework ensures a consistent approach to all applicants who apply for assistance.

The Scheme is open for submissions until Monday 14 September 2015 at 5pm. Projects must be completed by 30 June 2016. Anyone interested in applying must discuss their proposed project with the Manager Community Services on the details below.

Grant Writing Workshop

Representatives from not-for-profit community, sporting and service groups, event organisers are invited to attend this Grant Writing Workshop. Interested applicants are invited to attend either the morning or evening session.

This is a great opportunity to talk about the do’s and don’ts of grant writing and to discuss your project prior to applying for the Community Assistance Scheme Funding.

Date: Tuesday 25 August

Time: 10am – 11am and 5.30pm to 6.30pm

Change of Council Meeting Date

The Ordinary Council Meeting to be held Tuesday, 25 August 2015 has been rescheduled to 4.00pm on Monday, 24 August 2015 in the Ocean Room at the Irwin Rec, Ridley Street, Port Denison.


New Council Chambers

The interior of the new Council Chambers and offices are nearing completion and the Planning and Infrastructure team are now based here. However, enquries should continue to be made through the main administration office.

It is anticipated that the September Ordinary Council Meeting will be held in the new Council Chambers on Waldeck Street, Dongara. This will be confirmed in a future public notice.


Prospective Elected Members Information

WALGA is offering a free webinar for individuals who are considering becoming Elected Members on Wednesday, 12 August at 5.30pm. The webinar will run for 45 minutes and will cover the following topics:

  •  About Local Government
  • Becoming an Elected Member
  • Elected Member roles and responsibilities;
  • Council Meetings;
  • Personal responsibilities of an Elected Member such as what constitutes a conflict of interest and;
  • Impacts on Home Life.

The Shire of Irwin is also hosting a Candidate Information Session on Monday 24 August 2015 at 6:30 pm in the Ocean Room at the Recreation Centre following the Ordinary Council Meeting. Nominations for candidates to nominate for Council open on Thursday 3 September 2015 and close 4pm 10 September 2015.

The Local Government Election will be held on Saturday 17 October. However, Council have resolved for the election to be conducted by the WA Electoral Commission and held by postal vote.
