Obelisk Works Update

On Tuesday, 24 March Council resolved to make some modifications to the works recently commenced at the Obelisk Precinct (as part of the overall Foreshore Redevelopment Plan).

To provide some background, Council resolved at the February meeting to form a working group to consider community concerns raised regarding some of the kerb profiling and overall design. The Obelisk Precinct Working Group initially held a site meeting on Friday 27 February to discuss any proposed changes. Outcomes of this visit were raised at the Council Forum on 10 March and then changes were marked onsite to demonstrate the areas marked for modification. A subsequent agenda report was prepared for the March Ordinary Meeting.

Following production of this report and release of the Agenda, a community member-initiated protest meeting was held at the site on Sunday 22 March, at which a number of Councillors attended to assist in outlining the proposed changes to those present and to provide some background to the concept.

Although the Agenda report had been prepared, Council considered a signed works request submitted at the 24 March ordinary meeting from some residents expressing a desire for changes to the kerb profiling and the pedestrian thoroughfare, prior to adopting the officer’s recommendation whereby Council endorsed the Obelisk Concept Plan and authorised remedial works. A presentation was provided by the Coordinator Organisational Performance that included a slide show of photos demonstrating the proposed improvements and reasoning behind them.

A copy of this presentation is available on the Shire’s website or can be provided via email upon request. If you have reviewed the Concept Plan and relevant documents and still have concerns please contact Miss Lauren Tunbridge, Coordinator Organisational Performance or speak to your elected members.

Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MWCCI) Information Board, Brand Highway

You may be aware that the Information Board within the Information Bay near the BP Roadhouse on Brand Hwy is getting a makeover! The MWCCI Dongara Sub-Branch, Rotary Club and the Shire of Irwin are collaborating to provide an attractive, purposeful and up-to-date information sign. The sign is set to include business signage, a local map, and tourist information, and will integrate with the release of a business app providing access to relevant local information.

There may be minimal restrictions to parking in the area during installation but it is not expected that traffic access will be closed.

The anticipated completion date for this project is 1 June 2015.
