Sand Drift

The Shire is aware of the community concerns in respect to wind-blown sand drift from the Department of Mines and Petroleum’s sand mine lease on the southern sand dunes in Port Denison.

Shire staff have been in communication with the lessee and arrangements have been for the lessee’s General Manager to meet and discuss the matter with Shire Councillors on 10 February 2015.

The Shire has also sought legal advice in order to inform Council of hat legal options are available to address community concerns.

It is anticipated that following consultation with the lessee and receipt of the legal advice, Council will be in a position to determine its response and advise the community accordingly.

Kitestock 13 – 15 February 2015

Kitestock is on Friday, 13 February – Sunday, 15 February 2015 at South Beach, and set to be an event.

The Shire of Irwin provides a significant level of support for Kitestock, from bins, port-a-loos, to signage and grading the beach. Kitestock is the biggest kite surfing event in Australia, in previous years the event has brought more than 400 kiters to Dongara/Port Denison which promotes Dongara/Port Denison and is a potential financial windfall for all local businesses within the Shire. The event continues to grow every year and is a major event on the Dongara/Port Denison tourism calendar, strengthening Dongara/Port Denison’s reputation as a fantastic holiday and kite surfing destination.

Fire Ban Notifications

A Total Fire Ban has been declared for Friday, 6 February 2015 for all local governments in WA with the exception of those in the Pilbara and Kimberley, due to the fires in our states south-west.

The ban has been issued to relieve the high demand on firefighting resources across the state and the need to maintain a capability to respond to further fires.

This ban may continue over the coming week so please check our website of that of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services to check the status.

Shane Love MP, Member for Moore has posted on his Facebook page that he is aware of community concerns in the region regarding business continuity, interruptions to power supplies and communications, and remedial work has been delayed because of the fire bans.

Mr Love is responding to these concerns by raising the issues with the Minister for Energy, Dr Mike Nahan.

Donation to Lord Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund

The Shire of Irwin committed $5,000 in the 2014/15 Budget to donate towards the Lord Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund. The Shire recently issued a support letter and cheque to the fund and it is timely, with the recent bushfires that this donation is made.

The Lord Mayor's Distress Relief Fund was established in 1961 to provide relief of personal hardship and distress arising from natural disasters occurring within Western Australia. The perpetual fund is a registered charitable body and has approval of the Australian Taxation Office for tax deductibility of contributions.

Over the years the fund has assisted with relief appeals for many natural disasters, including the Dwellingup Fires in 2007, the Toodyay Fire Appeal in 2010, and in 2011 two appeals for the Gascoyne and Mid-West Floods and the Perth Hills Fire.

There is no current appeal however funds raised are pooled and distributed as required therefore it is anticipated that these funds will assist with the recent fire disasters in the south-west.
