Customer Service Officer – Tourism and Library Services

The Shire is currently seeking a permanent, part-time Customer Service Officer to provide tourism and library services on Wednesdays and Saturdays, as well as additional hours to cover staff during periods of leave. Sand Pollution

Shire staff met with Aglime this week in response to feedback from the community regarding possible sand pollution and affects on local residents and businesses. The Shire is working closely with Aglime to raise awareness of these issues and to engage with the local  community.

Digital TV

As outlined in last week’s Dongara Denison Local Rag, the Shire recently accepted a petition which highlights dissatisfaction with digital TV reception within the Shire of Irwin. The petition was presented at the 16 December 2014 Ordinary Council Meeting.

Council resolved at this meeting to liaise with Ms Melissa Price MP, Member for Durack in order to seek federal government assistance in relation to the issues raised within the petition. The Shire may be looking to collate specific information from residents and technicians regarding the issues being experienced in the coming weeks, please watch this space for further information.

Library / Licensing / Visitor Centre Changes

The Library / Licensing / Visitor Centre is changing its opening hours as of Monday, 2 February 2015. The opening hours will change to 8.30am – 4:30pm Monday to Friday, to align with the Shire Administration hours and 10am – 1pm Saturdays to meet tourists’ requirements on Saturdays. The Centre is also undergoing some renovation work between 6-10 February which may cause disruptions to service – further information will be provided in the coming weeks.

Australia Day 2015

Preparations for this year’s Australia Day is underway. We look forward to another great fireworks display by Stone Echo, who are generously sponsoring this event, as well as the popular food and market stalls, sideshow activities, face painting and more.

Please note that alcohol is not permitted along the foreshore area.

One of the highlights of the event is the announcement of this year’s Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards. The following people or groups have nominated this year;

Proposed Disposal of Property – Lot 13 Point Leander Drive, Dongara
(Former Shire Depot Site)

A reminder that submissions on the proposal to dispose of Lot 13 Point Leander Drive is open until 12 noon Monday, 2 February 2015 and can be mailed to the Chief Executive Officer, Shire of Irwin, PMB 21, DONGARA WA 6525 or emailed to reception@irwin.wa.gov.au.

Council Meetings – Temporary Venue Change

A reminder that all Council meetings and forums will be held in the Function Room at the Irwin Rec until the scheduled Ordinary Meeting on 28 April 2015, due to the unavailability of the Ocean Room.

Heritage Awards 2015-01-16

Nominations are now open for the Heritage Council’s 2015 Western Australian Heritage Awards. The awards highlight best practice in adaptive reuse, conservation, interpretation, heritage tourism, and promotion.

There are 8 award categories;

  • Voluntary Individual Contribution
  • Professional Contribution
  • Contribution by a Community-based Organisation
  • Contribution by a public or private organisation
  • Heritage practices by a local government
  • Interpretation Project
  • Heritage Tourism Project
  • Conservation or adaptive reuse of a state registered place.

There is also a Judges Award that is selected from across all categories.

Gymnastics is Back at the Shire of Irwin

The Irwin Rec is now taking registrations for Term 1 Gymnastics which commences Week 1 of Term (2 February). We will be having a registration afternoon on Thursday, 22 January between 3pm and 8pm at the Rec Centre. Classes will be confirmed after this date. Please note that late registrations will not be accepted.

If you are unable to attend the registration afternoon you can register your interest by calling us on 9955 9200, sending us a message on Facebook or in person at the Irwin Rec Centre.

**Please note – your child’s spot is not secure until payment is received** 

Irwin Rec School Holiday Program

The Irwin Rec is holding a School Holiday Program between 13 – 23 January 2015 (Monday to Friday). A discount applys to those who book and pay by Friday, 9 January 2015. Prices are as follows;

5 Days $75

4 Days $65

3 Days $55

Daily Cost $20
