A Brilliant Blend Bulletin - Issue 1 2015

Created on: Friday, 9 January 2015 at 8:54:32 AM

Wishing you a Happy New Year, on behalf of Councillors and staff. I hope you had an enjoyable holiday break and I look forward to what 2015 will bring.

In January there are a number of activities and events happening in our Shire for both local residents and visitors over the school holidays, including the Drive Ins, Irwin Rec School Holiday program, Australia Day activities and more. The Australia Day event will once again include a great fireworks display by Stone Echo plus stalls and entertainment along the foreshore and announcement of the Australia Day Citizenship Award nominees and winners.

There are also a number of projects kicking off or being completed, such as the commencement of works at the Obelisk as part of the foreshore redevelopment and the work being undertaken at Surf Beach to improve access, revegetate the dunes and complete the sea wall tie in.

Notification below outlines the proposed purchase of Lot 13 Point Leander Drive (former Shire Depot site) by Batavia Health to develop a purpose built health centre offering medical and allied health services. Should this transaction be successful this will be a major project for 2015.

Our first Ordinary Council Meeting will be held 24 February 2015 in the Function Room at the Irwin Rec. Meetings up until April will be held in the Function Room, as per a Council resolution in December, due to the Ocean Room being unsuitable. It is hoped that the Council Chambers at Waldeck Street will be available for use around mid 2015.

The SunSmart Kitestock event will be held over the weekend of 13 -15 February 2015 at South Beach in Port Denison, and will celebrate the 10th anniversary of this kite surfing event.

Information on upcoming events, activities of the Shire and community notices are made available through this newsletter, the Local Rag, our website, Facebook, Community Information Sign and more so please contact Erin Greaves, Coordinator Executive Services at ea@irwin.wa.gov.au or call 9927 0002 if you wish to register for our newsletter or discuss any content for inclusion in one of these mediums.

A reminder to residents and visitors that we encourage and rely on your input and feedback therefore please call or email us if you have any suggestions, complaints, compliments or concerns.

Wishing you all the best for the new year.

Proposed Disposal of Property – Lot 13 Point Leander Drive, Dongara
(Former Shire Depot Site)

In accordance with Section 3.58 of the Local Government Act 1995, the Shire of Irwin (the Shire) hereby gives notice of its intention to dispose of the former Shire Depot Site (at the rear of ‘Stomp Music’) being Lot 13 Point Leander Drive, Dongara (5,220m2) by private treaty to Batavia Health.

The sale of land would be subject to the following:

  • The purchase price to be set at $500,000 exclusive of GST;
  • A restrictive covenant being placed over the Lot to ensure that the property is used for the purpose of providing medical and allied health services for a minimum term of ten (10) years; and
  • The responsibility for the construction and long term maintenance of the car park and associated fencing on the Lot being the responsibility of the Shire of Irwin in exchange for a caveat and/or other legal instruments that ensure reciprocal medical centre and public vehicle parking is retained on the Lot.

Batavia Health proposes to develop a purpose built medical and allied health centre on the property.

An ‘as is – vacant land’ market valuation of $730,000 (exclusive of GST) dated 14 July 2014 has been procured by the Shire.

Submissions on the proposal can be mailed to the Chief Executive Officer, Shire of Irwin, PMB 21, DONGARA WA 6525 or emailed to reception@irwin.wa.gov.au and will be accepted until 12 noon Monday, 2 February 2015.

Please direct any enquiries to Miss Lauren Tunbridge, Coordinator Organisational Performance on 9927 0000 or via email hr@irwin.wa.gov.au.

Foreshore Development

As you may be aware the Shire of Irwin has been recently doing some planning work for the Port Denison Foreshore precinct. As a first stage of the rejuvenation, we will be undertaking some work in mid-late January around the Obelisk area.

The restructuring of the road design and installation of proper footpaths will assist in creating a space that is user friendly for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Please note that during the time of works, part of this area will be inaccessible (will be signposted accordingly) - we appreciate your cooperation in advance.

To find the full copy of the Foreshore Master Plan, please visit the Shire of Irwin website (see documents > general). http://www.irwin.wa.gov.au/Documents/default.aspx

Expressions of Interest – Australia Day Stall Holders

The Shire of Irwin would like to invite applications from Stall Holders for either market or food stalls to participate in our Australia Day Celebrations on 26 January 2015 being held on the Port Denison Foreshore from 5pm to 8pm. This is a great opportunity for Clubs to fundraise and we expect to attract a lot of people down to the foreshore for these celebrations.

If you are interested in having a stall or any other activity at our celebrations, we would like to hear from you.

For more information, or any queries, please contact Manager Community Services Coralie Palmer on 9927 0000 or email managercommunity@irwin.wa.gov.au

Safe Driving on the Beach

Dongara is blessed with magnificent beaches and the privilege to enjoy these beaches by way of 4WD, motorbikes and all terrain vehicles.

Before you drive on the coast make sure you know the local rules about using vehicles on beaches. The Shire of Irwin Ranger regularly patrols our shoreline during the summer months.

By following the tips below you will help protect our beaches and have a safe and enjoyable visit.

  • Recognise the right of others to use the beach. Keep a lookout for pedestrians. Be alert and drive carefully at walking pace.
  • Drive at the high tide mark to avoid contact with other beach users.
  • Drive in areas not used by general beach users eg. Families & Recreational Fisherman.
  • Park using care for others.
  • Observe all laws and regulations relating to the use of vehicles on beaches; you can still be charged for dangerous driving.
  • Do not drink and drive.
  • Vegetated sand dunes are easily damaged. Strictly avoid these areas.
  • Keep off the sand dunes except at designated crossing points for access to and from the beach.
  • Keep the beaches and dunes clean; carry your rubbish home. If others have left a mess, consider cleaning it up.

It takes only a few inconsiderate people to damage the reputation of all 4WD and all terrain vehicle users.

For further information please contact the Shire of Irwin on 9927 0000 or the Ranger on 0427 110 237.

Keep Our Marine Areas Clean

A reminder to all to please dispose of rubbish thoughtfully when boating and fishing in our waterways this summer

Taking care of our environment is a shared responsibility in which we all play an important role.

Plastic items, including drink containers and bait bags, pose the biggest threat to our marine environment as they do not biodegrade. Rather, plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller particles, which are often ingested by marine animals causing them to become sick. In many cases, rubbish also ends up washed up on our beautiful beaches.

Some important reminders for when using our recreational waters:

When boating, stow your rubbish where it can’t be washed or blown away and bring all waste and litter back to shore to dispose of properly.

When fishing, leave no litter, dispose of rubbish thoughtfully; use a bin or take it home. Avoid disposables plastics if you can.

And please bin your butts, put them in a personal ashtray or bin and never into the water.

Please keep our environment clean for everyone.

Please contact Miss Heather Watts, Environmental Health Officer on 9927 0000 or email eho1@irwin.wa.gov.au for further information.
