Grant Approval for Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan

The Shire has recently been advised that grant funding has been approved for the Shire to undertake a Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan through Western Australian Planning Commission’s Coastal Management Plan Assistance Program.

Funding will be used to collate and analyse relevant data for coastal hazard modelling and develop the Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan. The main outcomes of the Plan are to;

Increase knowledge of coastal features, processes and hazards in the Shire.Include stakeholders and community in planning and decision-making process.Identify and value assets (both natural and man-made) impacted by coastal hazards and their functions.Determine sensitivity and exposure of impacts from coastal hazards on assets and assign a level of vulnerability. Determine likelihood and consequence of impacts from coastal hazards on assets and assign a level of risk.Identify relevant management/adaptation actions and how these can be incorporated into short and long term planning.

Consultation with the community and stakeholders will be integral to the project’s success and future planning.

More information will be provided once the project gets underway.

AWE Well Decommissioning Project

A series of well site decommissioning activities is kicking off in the Shire of Irwin as part of AWE Limited’s campaign to rehabilitate well sites which are no longer in use. Decommissioning is an established industry practice undertaken at the end of a well’s lifecycle.

Well decommissioning involves environmentally sound and safe isolation of the well. Typical steps of the process include: removing any production tubing, isolating productive formations from other formations by installing cement plugs at several intervals, testing of the cement plugs, cutting off the well head below ground level, removing remaining surface equipment and facilities and rehabilitating the site to an agreed end use.

Approximately 80 wells are included on the project schedule which may take up to five years to complete. Most of these sites are on cleared agricultural land. AWE is using local services and supplies whenever practical.

Regulatory approvals for the decommissioning project are in progress. Approved environmental management measures to minimise any potential impacts include: dust suppression, noise, traffic and waste management and weed and dieback management. Chemicals used during the decommissioning process are included in the Environment Plan Summary.

Landowners and nearby residents are being consulted prior to activities starting at each well site.

If you would like additional information about this project, or any other, please contact AWE Limited (email: perth@awexplore.com, ph: 9480 1300).
