Fire Danger Ratings

If you live in a bushfire risk area you need to know what the Fire Danger Rating is for your area, monitor local conditions and keep informed. Understanding the FDR categories and what they mean will help you make decisions about what to do if a bushfire starts.

  • Put your survival first and leave bushfire risk areas the night before or early in the day – this is your best option.
  • Act immediately - do not wait and see
  • Leave now.
  • Avoid forested areas, thick bush or long, dry grass.
  • Take shelter if you cannot leave.

Extreme or Severe

  • Only stay with your property if you are prepared to the highest level. This means your home needs to have been constructed to bushfire protection levels e.g. enclosed eaves, covers over external air conditioners, metal fly screens etc.
  • You must be well prepared and able to actively defend your home if a fire starts. This means you have the right equipment and resources to put out fires around your home e.g. enough water supply, petrol/diesel portable pump, generator, protective clothing etc.
  • If you are not prepared to the highest level, leaving bushfire risk areas early in the day is your safest option.

Very High

  • Well prepared homes that are actively defended can provide safety. This means you have the right equipment and resources to put out fires around your home e.g. enough water supply petrol/diesel portable pump, generator, protective clothing etc.

High / Low-Moderate

  • Check your bushfire survival plans
  • Monitor conditions.
  • Action may be required.
  • Leave if necessary.

The Fire Danger Rating is based on the weather forecast and gives you advice about the level of bushfire threat on a particular day.

RV Friendly Rating

The Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) are pleased to officially declare Dongara as an RV Friendly Town™.

By promoting the partnership between recreational vehicle (RV) travellers and small towns, CMCA hopes to encourage the expansion of tourism related infrastructure and services, and also boost the economy of those small towns providing RV tourist specific amenities.

In order to qualify for the scheme, towns must successfully meet the needs of RV travellers and satisfy stringent criteria including:

Access to medical facilities, a pharmacy, a dump point and a general shopping areaProvision of appropriate parkingA Visitor Information Centre and vehicle service centre

CMCA also considers the general attitude of the local council and community, so as to truly identify the friendliest areas in Australia.

The advantage of Dongara becoming an RV Friendly Town™ is that the business communities will benefit from the dollars spent by these mobile travellers. The value of road based tourism in Australia is estimated to be $7 billion per annum.

The Shire was awarded the Bronze Local Government Award at the 2013 WA Tourism Awards and is very proud to have gone one better bring the Silver Local Government Award for Tourism at the 2014 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards. This industry recognition is a testament of the hard work the Irwin community has undertaken in recent years to develop and promote tourism as an important and worthwhile industry sector for Dongara-Port Denison’s economic and social vibrancy.

In addition, the process of submitting a nomination provided a valuable opportunity to critically appraise the work the Shire is undertaking in the tourism field and ensures Shire staff, across all work areas, pursue best practice initiatives as evident with the opening of a blackwater waste dump point, the recent adoption by Council of a policy to allow free overnight stopping by travellers in self contained vehicles close to the Dongara town centre has ultimately seen Dongara designated as an “RV friendly” community by the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia.
