National Reconciliation Week (NRM)

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

This week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort.

The theme for this year is Let’s Talk Recognition – with a focus on how Australians can better recognise each other, and recognise the contributions, cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

We all know the importance of recognition and how good it makes us feel. National Reconciliation Week is the perfect opportunity to recognise all Australians, and the unique place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within this country.

Strategic Plan - Community Engagement Report Findings - Strengths and Weaknesses

At the Community workshop, participants were asked to comment on what makes them 'sad' and 'glad' about the Shire of Irwin. An overview of the responses provided are summarised in the table below.

Dongara Charities

I had the pleasure of attending an afternoon tea at the Sea Rescue Hall on Saturday with Shire President, Stuart Chandler. The afternoon tea was to celebrate the Dongara Charities Association Inc (Op Shop) being 10 years old. The Dongara Charities Association continues to grow in strength and we congratulate you on this wonderful milestone.

Unfconfined Dogs

The Shire Ranger has been called out to follow up several sightings of dogs wandering at large not accompanied by an owner. Dog owners are reminded that dogs must be confined effectively within the premises that they live, particularly in the urban streets. Failure to comply could incur a penalty of
$1,000.
