Employee of the Month – July 2014

The Shire had several nominations for Employee of the Month for July 2014 which resulted in a tie. At the Ordinary Council Meeting held 26 August 2014 the Employee of the Month Award was jointly presented by the Shire President to;

Sheryl Hobbs – for delivering a highly successful School Holiday Program in July 2014 and in particular, taking on the challenge to design and deliver an appropriate program themed around recycling. Feedback received from parents and children for the program were very complimentary. Nominator: Kylie Bessen with supporting letters from members of the public.

Stacey Pratt-King – for demonstrating leadership, great communication, commitment and diligence to process and detail. Stacey has had a positive impact on the team and assisted the Depot in achieving very positive results in the recent OH&S Audit. Nominators: Did not wish to be disclosed (x2)

Congratulations to Lauren Tunbridge and Wayne Waters who were also nominated this month.

A CEO Team Commendation was also awarded for the month of July 2014;
Works Operation Team – for designing and developing the drainage swales at the roundabout on Point Leander Drive. Well done on producing an attractive and innovative solution.

Dongara Denison Drive In

The Shire President accepted a cheque from Mr Shane Love MLA on Monday, 18 August 2014, presented on behalf of Lotterywest, for $46,000 to go towards a digital upgrade to the Dongara Denison Drive In.

The upgrade will include the purchase of a digital projector system and facility improvements. Upgrading the system to digital is necessary for purchasing latest release movies and to further expand its use.

Contributing partners and community stakeholders were invited to attend, attendees included Mr David Guise, Regional Manager WA, AWE Pty Ltd, Mrs Rowena Watson and Mrs Joyce Huck of Dongara Charities, Mr Adrian and Mrs Katrina Scatena of IGA (as local Lotterywest retailers), Mr Jeff and Mrs Fiona Cockman of the Dongara Denison Surf Life Saving Club, Cr Ian West, Cr Riki Porteus, Cr Bronwen Scott, Mr Darren Simmons, Chief Executive Officer and Shire of Irwin project management staff.

Shire CEO, Darren Simmons said, “It’s great to have the public and private sectors working together for the benefit of the community” and went on to say “this project provides the opportunity to operate in the digital age, securing a more viable and relevant future while maintaining the cultural significance and atmosphere of a Drive In.”

The Shire President acknowledged Council’s project partners and outlined its commitment to supporting such investments in the community. Cr Chandler also recognised the value the Drive In provides to our community, “we are lucky to have such a unique and iconic feature”. “Council is proud to support a project that holds such social value to local families and neighbouring communities in the Midwest.”

The Shire President invited Mr David Guise to speak on behalf of AWE, who contributed $50,000 towards this project. Mr Guise outlined his company’s commitment to supporting community projects within the Shire of Irwin.

Mrs Rowena Watson, President of Dongara Charities was also thanked for their contribution of $10,000.

A light luncheon was held following the ceremony at the Irwin Recreation Centre. Once the digital equipment has been installed and it is ready for operation the Shire intends to host an opening ceremony to celebrate the occasion. It is anticipated the Drive In will be operational by November this year.

Congratulations to Mr Shane Love MLA – Dongara Office Opens

The Shire of Irwin congratulates Mr Shane Love MLA, Member for Moore, on the opening of his Electorate Office in Moreton Tce, Dongara.

The Office officially opens on Thursday, 4 September 2014 with the Hon Terry Redman MLA officiating the opening. Residents have been invited to attend (see recent mail drop) and are asked to rsvp by 2 September 2014.

Discounted Sterilisations for Cats at Dongara Veterinary Hospital

The Dongara Veterinary Hospital is currently offering discounted sterilisations for holders of a current Pension or Health Care Card.

All cats over the age of 6 months are required to be microchipped, wearing a collar and registration tags, sterilised and registered with the local government.

Registration discounts are available to cat owners who present a current Pension Card and proof of sterilisation is provided (must be presented at time of registration).

Change of Meeting Date – September 2014

Please note the Ordinary Council Meeting to be held on Tuesday, 23 September 2014 has been rescheduled to Wednesday, 24 September 2014 at 4pm in the Ocean Room, at the Irwin Recreation Centre.

The meeting has been rescheduled to accommodate staff and elected member attendance at the Mid West Resource and economic Summit to be held in Geraldton on 23 September 2014.

Proposal for Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Legislation

The Department of Local Government and Communities (DLGC) has released the Consultation Paper: Proposal for Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Legislation.

The DLGC proposes to develop new caravan parks and camping grounds legislation to replace the existing Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Act 1995. The overarching objective is to provide a legislative framework which meets the needs of consumers, operators and regulators now, and into the future.

The Consultation Paper is open for comment for a three month period, closing Monday, 1 September. The Consultation Paper and Feedback Form can be accessed from the DLGC website www.dlg.wa.gov.au. Please contact us should you wish to find out more or provide feedback.

Author Visit – Fiona Palmer and Rachel Johns

The Shire invites you to a Double Author Visit on Thursday 25 September, 5:30pm – 7:30pm in the Ocean Room, Irwin Rec Centre. Tickets are available at the Dongara Public Library and cost $5 per person. Refreshments will be available on the night.

Library Visit by Pre Primary and Kindergarten Students from DDHS

Students from the Dongara District High School, from the Pre Primary and Kindergarten classes visited the Dongara Public Library on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

The children were invited to dress up as their favourite book character. The children enjoyed stories read to them by Pirate Koot (Carolyn) and were provided with free Better Beginnings Packs. The pack includes books and valuable information for parents on the importance of reading to children from birth.

Nominations Open for Australian of the Year Awards 2015

The Australian of the Year Awards recognise inspirational role models who make a significant contribution to the community and Australia.

There are four categories;

  • Australian of the Year
  • Senior Australian of the Year (aged 60 and over at 26 January 2015)
  • Young Australian of the Year (aged 16 to 30 at 26 January 2015)
  • Australia’s Local Hero (for excellence at a local community level)

You can nominate your hero by completing a nomination form available online at australianoftheyear.org.au or by picking up a Nomination Form/Pamphlet at the Administration Office.

Proposed Omnibus Amendment to Local Planning Scheme No. 5

Notice is hereby given that the local government of the Shire of Irwin has prepared an omnibus amendment to the Shire’s planning scheme, which proposes modifications to the text only (i.e. no changes to the scheme maps are proposed). The amendment is available for inspection in order to provide an opportunity for public comment. It should not be construed that final approval will be granted.

The proposed omnibus amendment is available for viewing at the Shire of Irwin offices, 11-13 Waldeck Street, Dongara, or online at www.irwin.wa.gov.au under the Planning menu. Please direct any enquiries to Mr Doug Fotheringham, Manager Planning Services. Comments on the draft may be submitted to the Shire in writing on or before 4:30pm on Friday, 19 September 2014.
