LMGA Australasian Management Challenge

As previously reported, the Shire of Irwin was successful in the WA Australasian Management Challenge in March 2014 and were invited to represent Western Australia in the Finals held in Melbourne on 19 and 20 June.

Winners of the Final were Warrnambool City Council, with New Zealand’s Whakatane District coming in second and Burnie Council in third. While the Shire of Irwin didn’t place, the team performed exceptionally well, surprising the other participants in the competition who were all from large city councils or regional centre’s.

The Irwin team, nicknamed the ‘Productivity Bees’ by the Local Government Managers Australia WA (LGMAWA), was made up of officers and managers with varied experience, qualifications and skill sets but were obviously a winning combination. Erin Greaves – Executive Assistant (Team Leader), Doug Fotheringham – Manager Planning Services, Felix Neuweiler – Manager Community Safety, Nicole Nelson – Manager Tourism and Library Services, Arqum Hayat – Planning Officer and Carolyn Koot – Customer Service Officer made up the team, mentored by Suzette van Aswegen – Director Planning and Infrastructure.

The Shire President was presented with a trophy and certificate acknowledging the Shire of Irwin’s achievements as WA State Finalists and participants in the Australasian Challenge at the Ordinary Council meeting on 24 June 2014.

The team reports that the Management Challenge was a fantastic learning and development experience for participants and a great opportunity to network with other local governments and gain some great ideas for innovation and productivity in the sector.

The Shire congratulates the team on such a significant achievement.
