Community Safety & Crime Prevention

A safe community is a place that is attractive to live, work, visit and do business. Perceptions of community safety, real or perceived, impact on the way people feel and interact in their community.

A Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan is both a strategic and practical document that provides a framework for local government, local community groups and key government agencies to implement initiatives that will improve community safety over all.

Safety and Crime Prevention Plan 2016 - 2020

The Shire of Irwin's Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan was adopted by Council in March 2016. The Plan is consistent with the State Crime Prevention Strategy with a vision to make communities throughout Western Australia safer through targeted, coordinated and consultative initiatives that reduce and prevent crime. To achieve this long-term vision, the strategy has five principal goals:

  • Goal 1 : Supporting families, children and young people;
  • Goal 2 : Empowering communities and regenerating neighbourhoods;
  • Goal 3 : Identifying and tackling priority offences in Western Australia;
  • Goal 4 : Reducing repeat offending; and
  • Goal 5 : Designing out crime and using technology.

Objective: The Plan aims to -

  • Identify the key concerns of the community and address these with strategies to be implemented over the next three years; and
  • Work with other local agencies and groups to ensure that a "whole-of-community" approach is taken to community safety and crime prevention.
