Waste Management

The Shire of Irwin is committed to caring for the environment by implementing sustainable waste management practices that will assist in minimising waste to landfill.

Veolia Environmental Services is the Shire's contractor for the provision of all waste management services within the municipality.

The Shire's Transfer Station is located on Dee Street, near the Golf Course. A free Drop-off facility is provided at the Transfer Station for the following items: Car batteries, green waste, aluminium cans, steel products, white goods, newspaper, timber and engine oil. Charges apply for tires, car bodies, builder's waste, liquid waste and general refuse (please refer to our Fees & Charges).

Waste Disposal Services

To allow easy pick-up of waste, each residential property is required to have a 240 litre mobile rubbish bin which may be purchased from the Shire Office. The cost of a bin is $125 and, upon payment, will be delivered to the nominated property.

Strategic Waste Management Plan

The Waste Management Board (WMB) in its efforts to reduce the amount of waste being generated in Western Australia announced a Zero Waste Management Plan Development Scheme (ZWPDS) in 2006. The ZWPDS is intended to assist Local Government in Western Australia with the preparation of Strategic Waste Management Plans (SWMP) in order to facilitate enhanced planning for municipal waste management and recycling. It is intended that the plans will assist Local Governments in aligning their activities with the State's vision of 'Towards Zero Waste'.

You can view a copy of the plan here:

Rubbish Collection

The mobile bin is for the disposal of all general household waste and is collected once a week. Items not to be placed in this bin include building materials, large garden cuttings, oils, acids or other liquids.

Placement Of Bins

The mobile bins are emptied by Council's Contractors - Veolia Environmental Services (formerly Collex), and should be out as early as 6.00am on collection days. Residents are advised to put their bins out the night before to avoid them being missed. All bins should be placed approximately half a metre from the kerb and half a metre apart from each other, with the lid opening to face the road. Do not place bins under trees or park cars in front of bins.

Bulk Bin Service

A Bulk Bin Service is available. The service fee is included on your rates notice, with a variety of sizes and collection days. Please contact the Rates Department for further information in relation to the Bulk Bin Service on 9927 0000.
