Bush Fire Prevention

No Burning of any type is permitted, including incinerators, on days of very high or extreme fire danger

When And How To Burn

Barbecues And Incinerators

Gas and electric barbecues are permitted at any time. Solid fuel barbecues and incinerators are PROHIBITED on days of VERY HIGH or EXTREME FIRE DANGER.

Garden Refuse And Restricted Burning Season

Small heaps (up to 1 cubic metre) of garden refuse may be burnt on the ground between 6pm and 11pm, but only after a 5 metre wide firebreak has been cleared around the fire, and at least one able-bodied person is in attendance at all times. A Permit is not required. BURNING IS PROHIBITED on days of VERY HIGH or EXTREME FIRE DANGER.

Prohibited Burning Season

No garden rubbish or refuse is permitted to be burnt in an open fire during the prohibited burning season. It may only be burnt in an approved incinerator.

Approved Incinerator

The incinerator is to be constructed on steel, brick or a combination of these materials. Every incinerator shall be constructed, or covered, to prevent the emission of sparks or burning material.

How To Obtain Permits

Burning permits can be obtained from the Shire Office, or from your local Permit Issuing Officer, depending on where you live in the Shire.

When you apply for a Permit you will need to provide the Lot or Location Number, and the Street Name of the property concerned.Firebreaks

Notice to all landowners and/or occupiers of land in the Shire of Irwin

Pursuant to the powers contained in Section 33 of the above Act, you are hereby required to have firebreaks cleared of all inflammable material for the periods specified herein, in such positions and to such dimensions as required by this notice.

Rural Land (Land other than that within the Dongara and Port Denison Townsites)

On or before 1 October 2012 and thereafter up until and including 30 April 2013, you shall observe the following:

  1. Boundary firebreaks are not compulsory within the Shire of Irwin Rural area outside of the Dongara Town Bush Fire Brigade control area (Item 1.5). However, landowners are encouraged to provide firebreaks, particularly in areas of high risk.
  2. Have firebreaks not less than two (2) metres in width and within one hundred (100) metres of the perimeter of any building or haystack or groups of buildings or haystacks situated on the land. Such firebreaks must completely encircle the said buildings and/or haystacks.
  3. Have firebreaks not less than two (2) metres in width immediately abutting any building or haystack or groups of buildings or haystacks situated on the land.
  4. Have firebreaks not less than five (5) metres around all uncleared land, including land upon which the regeneration of native species of bush has occurred.
  5. All landowners in the Dongara Town Bush Fire Brigade control area (bounded by all that area of land south from Mt Horner West Road, west of Water Supply Road and Pettit Lane and thereafter south and west of Brand Highway to Kailis Drive) have the option of either installing a two metre firebreak, or a twenty metre slashed or heavily grazed firebreak to a maximum height of 100mm.

Townsite Land (Land situated within the townsites of Dongara, Port Denison and Irwin Townsite)

On or before 31 October 2012 and thereafter up until and including 30 April 2013, you shall:

  1. Have the land cleared of all flammable material where the area of the land is 5000 square metres or less.
  2. Have firebreaks not less than three (3) metres in width immediately inside and along all boundaries of land exceeding 5001 square metres in area.
  3. Have firebreaks not less than three (3) metres in width immediately abutting all buildings situated on land exceeding 5001 square metres in area.
